Ft. Eustis was where I did my 67U training. Mind you this was back in 1980.
We had a different name for the post. Ft. Uterus, Vag**ia.
Lots of Marines and Thurston Howells around there. Norfolk is the really big base there.
The closest 'club' right off post (at that time) was called 'The Red Barn'. I'm sure it's long gone.
For me basic (Ft. Jackson, SC) and AIT were exercises in boredom and frustration. A lot of what I heard about how 'horrifying' and 'savage' it was going to be just turned out to be a lot of hokum. You get yelled at for no apparent reason, you do what they tell you, when they tell you, you move when they tell you to move, you do stupid things that make no sense because 'the boss' wants to show he's in charge.... so pretty much what it's like out in the working world, except your 'business suit' is Army green.
Now, Germany.... oh, man. That's when things got fun.
Don't do anything that'll get you an Article 15, and you'll keep the coin they send you. Also, learn how to hand sew; it'll save you from getting ripped off by the post seamstresses (name tags, rank patches, unit patches, etc. don't come pre-sewn; that's your responsibility).
Have fun!

MSP
