Eastland Rocket Progress

Well you didnt take any of our suggestions at all. And if I say any feedback It will just sound too harsh, so I will just keep my comments to myself.

Unless you really want my feedback?

What suggestions? I did change the radius you just can't see it. Also added some barns and 1947 Buick's as in my earlier shots. And an elevated strip that the tracks are on. Plus a river and a couple of roads winding through and under my bridge. I can't really show all that much I can only get so much plus I'd like to add more but no one has ever created what I'd really like to use. Plus I've asked on the cars but no one has responded.

@Kris94

You are afflicted with what a supervisor back in my Air Force days called "tunnel vision" (the comment was directed at me and my sometimes way of thinking). In the aftermath of hurricane Katrina, General Honore commented to a reporter to not get "stuck on stupid".

I have found myself at times "stuck on stupid" or "tunnel vision".

It's when you look at something very closely, but only from a narrow viewpoint, and thus you miss a whole lot. It's focusing in on specific aspects yet missing the bigger picture.

A forest is made up of individual trees, and so they are added to the route. It's easy to see that I've added the trees and I like them, but to someone else they see the forest and it doesn't look right. Because I'm too focused with the individual trees.

Farms are neat rows, so I add neat rows of crops. But how big are these farms? And surely there must be some imperfections about. Dirt roads, transitional textures and fences are what I see when driving my car in the real world. With "tunnel vision" it's easy to just envision only those aspects needed. And much is missed. And the whole picture experience is missed.

I don't claim to know the treatise for the ultimate route but I try to learn from others.

OK Kris I have reproduced one of your section of route. And added in some tips that I think might be helpful.

The more variety of textures you use the better it looks. But for simplcity I only used 1 of each kind.

Hi Kris,

This is a nice start. Use what the others have shown you here, and you'll have an awesome route.

Here's a couple shots from my route that I've built over the years and one from an earlier version that no longer exists. :(

These sections were built using a combination of displacement maps, and hand sculpting.

Note the track raised up to form a grade just as Hert does.

The last picture is from a sadly no longer available route that was done in TRS2006. This was damaged when I lost a hard drive a few years ago. I have an older version, but it's not the same.

As others here have pointed out here, the Great Plains are far from flat. They consist of rolling hills with deep cuts or valleys where rivers have etched into the soft soil. These hills are not large like they where you are in the west, or where I live in New England, but the ground is not flat as a plate, except in the western portion of the Texas Panhandle.

What you might find helpful is getting down to eye-level and surveying along. With this you can then visualise where you want to place hills, and other land features.

Anyway, the thing is don't be afraid to experiment. Remember there's no waste here unlike an old model trainset where you've spent a lot of money on plywood, glue, plaster, and track. You don't like a section here, rip it out and try again.
The only thing you've wasted is time.

No one is judging you on what you're doing. We're only helping you when you show us your progress. :)

John

But I'm stuck. You guys have speed trees. The trees that I have in TS2009 aren't all that good. Plus the stitch trees make certain things disappear and have the sky point through. I might have to show you what I mean.

I know exactly what you mean. Run in compatibility mode, and your trees will look okay. My last pic, with the bridge and the big lake, actually wored fine in TRS2009. That was compatibility mode there.

No!! Never again will I run TS2009 in compatibility mode, it slows down the game and degrades the overall performance and graphics as well.

Ooh Very Nice hert and John. Hert, what's the farm combine? Is that one of Deane's creations?

Okay made some modifications but not competely done yet. Never mind the steam engine in the background. I'm using it for thread exception purposes. Will continue on it tomorrow depending on what mood I'm in and how I feel. If not tomorrow, then definitely Tuesday.

Does anyone know of any 3rd party sites or what have you that contains QUALITY 1940s vintage era content? I'm gonna need all that's available. Make sure it's for the USA though.
