earlier trainz versions

Realistically TRS2006 did most of its processing on a single core and didn't make much use of the GPU.

Today's computers are practically all dual core or quad core or even more so it doesn't take full advantage of them.

From memory TS2009 gives better performance than TRS2006 on a single core machine and better frame rates same content, same viewing distances.

TS12 started to take more advantage of the GPU, TANE really does do better on the GPU side. On my system I get better frame rates using TANE than earlier versions. Keep the content simple and TANE will run on intel integrated graphics series 4000 or better but a GTX 1050 TI
is about the lowest you'd want to run it on.

TRS2006 content should run with later versions by the way.

TRS2006 will probably run into the same issues as TS2010 running on newer computers as regards textures etc. Also a secondhand copy off Ebay is likely to have had the serial number registered so unlikely to authenticate with N3V.

Best bet for retro players would be TS2010, with the caveat above plus the fact compared to TANE or TRS2019 there were actually quite a few issues and niggles which have been ironed out in the current versions.

In this case though he has 2006 on his timeline so can use the serial number from that. The question I would ask is why 2006 when 2009, 10 and TS12 are way better? is it going backwards for a specific reason or just wanting to reinstall an old version for nostalgic reasons.

I've been trying to find 04, 06, and Ultimate myself... just to compete my collection and to run on some legacy machines I have.
The hard part is finding new copies, however there are new copies of the original Trainz on ebay. I snapped one up :)

TRS2004 is only good for downloading and transferring old routes that show: "No Map Selected"

TRS2006 will give you problems as most old assets are updated, to higher trainz-builds, and will not show up unless you backdate the config file trainz-build tag lines for all the assets, and all of their dependencies

TRS2009 is not much better

TRS2010 is not much better

TS12 is as low as I would go

T:ANE is the next better

I still keep my original route in TRS2006 trainz-build 2.6 format, as the surveyor is so user friendly, and so easy to use ... I transfer my 06 route using TS12 as a importing tool, and further transfer it into T:ANE for testing ... But I will always use TRS2006 for editing my route

I have TRS2006 Trainz Railwayz-Full Version, SP1, build #3337 trainz-build 2.6 by Merscom, and it works flawlessly

Agree, so basically all he needs to get is the installation files if he doesn't have the disk and just use that serial number to install TRS2006.. I don't know how it works between the reguar edition and the limited editon (which I own).

Peace

I have both TRS2004 and the free version of 09.

With 04, I have a very simple, sure fire version of Trainz that works on my system, albeit with some compromises in areas. I can throw created content into it with care with few problems.

With 09, I have an overly complex version that insists on taking over at every turn. I have to use a graphics card driver that drives me nuts and doesn't let me use other legacy software on hand. Some of the features of 09 are kind of hard to live without, however.

The 06 version would probably land somewhere in the middle and I've often though about going that route myself.

When you go backwards to TRS2006 you quickly get disappointed that thousands and thousands of assets that you backdate, will not even show up in TRS2006 ... This track won't show up ... that loco won't run ... etc ... etc

Backdate from what? 09?

If they worked in 04, they'll work in 06! :D
And Yes ... 09, 10, 12, T:ANE, TMR17, TS19, track, routes, and almost all assets, will not backdate into 06 and 04

No kidding ... A UTC route and older assets will run in T:ANE and TS19

Good on ya for backdating content to UTC. Never tried that myself.

As far as 09 goes.... You're doing it wrong. A good portion of the assets in 09 are for 06 anyway. It even comes with the 06 manual for goodness sake.

And no disappointment here. Part of the fun for me is making 04 look more like 09. Asset by tasty asset. Mwuaahahahaha!

TS12, TS10, and TS09 are all 32bit programs, as are 06, 04, and previous versions are all 32bit programs, and quite a lot of the higher trainz-build assets, can not be backdated into 06, 04, and previous versions, because once updated beyond TRS2006 trainz-build, the files can not be read by 06, 04, and previous versions, as they are non-backwards compatible

I have run all the older versions from TRS2004 to TS12 quite recently as I looked through my backups and found some really, really old stuff I wanted to look at. TRS2004 loaded up fine in Windows 10, but that wasn't the problem. I had forgotten how to install local content! Ooops! I know I could have done the file finagling and loaded the route into TRS19, but that wasn't the point. I wanted to run it in TRS2004!

TRS2006 had issues with the network even when running as administrator in Windows 10. Content Manager would freeze and require a rebuild. If I was lucky and hit ESC quick enough, I could get around the lock up. The program its self ran fine, however.

TRS2009 and TS2010 had no issues loading, but like TRS2004 and TRS2006, I found them awfully blah compared to even TS12. I still use these periodically to convert routes and test assets but they're pretty much out of date now.

Using the oldest version, TRS2004, I opened up my old route for kicks, laughed quite loudly at my work and deleted it. It was the bestest work I ever did back in March 2004 when I made that backup to CD because if I remember, I was reformatting my drive and didn't want to lose my hard work. TRS2004 through TRS2006 were promptly removed from my system after that.

In some ways it was nostalgic powering these up. The Auran aliens video in TRS2004 brought back memories of my cat, now 16 years old, running into the room to watch the loading screen. She sat there intently and even looked behind the monitor once to see where they went when the short video ended. Other little memories came up too as I looked at the date of my backup. Those were better times for me and I only wish I could go back and start over in so many ways for so many reasons.

Hi Guys
The reason i am asking about trainz 2006 is because i have lost the CD
The other reason is that i have a route in 2009 that i am trying to rebuild and i used a
Lot of items from 2006 and as many websites since have closed and can not find them
but all the items is all installed in trainz 2006.
So that my only way to get the missing items for the route in 2009
Regards
Tonny

Tonny.

You know you can import TRS2006 data right into TRS2009?

In TRS2009 Content Manager, use File Import and browse to the folder where TRS2006 is installed.

Once you start importing, click skip or no to all (I can't remember the option), and this will skip over the stuff that's already included in TRS2009.

The alternative is to purchase a disc on Amazon or Ebay and use your own serial number (CD-Key) in place of the one on the purchased disc. What that will do is give you to software.
