DVD+RW Drive/Trainz fail?

Casper

do regular monthly (usually!) full system backups to DVD

If you were doing this on the same drive now giving you problems i would not place too much reliance on your later backups.

I suggest you grab Euphods offer, get your new drive and do a backup then install the new non DRM version. There is no reason, apart from drive space, why you can't install Ed's version as well as your existing one, then transfer your data across.

...regarding TC3 (S&C) upgrade. I thought I had to get the hang of TRS2006 first?...

"One giant leap for a man" :)

...We drive through March once per year en route to Fakenham, usually around mid Spring...

If you go the way I think you do then you will pass within half a mile of my village, and my local pub which does a reasonable lunch, so if you fancy boring you "other half" to death enroute to Fakenham PM me!

Back on topic, I would be a bit cautious about the advice that PC World (and the like) may give - they are salesmen paid on commision after all!

Check out your drive specifications on the internet to see what new models equal or beat the specs if you can. You should not have to pay much for a decent drive.

Success!

Good evening everyone.

I’m pleased to report that all is now working.

My newly purchased HP external DVD/CD writer now reads the Trainz disk, after a brief moment of panic – it needed the two USB connections from the supplied double cable to be connected before it had enough energy to power up.

Trainz is now Surveying again. I’ll try burning some files to it later today.

I also bought a portable hard drive for backups.

Please don’t ask how much I paid, because if I tell you I know that at least 53 members will tell me where I could have bought the kit for a third of the price and spoil my day:(. It wasn't too bad a deal compared with the Internet prices I've compared, and I also know where I can go back and thump the desk if I get any problems! So, until the next inevitable technical difficulty, I shall just wallow in the joy of getting back into Trainz and thank everyone for their kindness, help and support:wave:.

I’ve had more than one offer of a Build 2365 edition of TRS2004, which is much appreciated and I may well follow up one within the UK.

Thanks again to everyone for all of the assistance both within this thread and via PMs.

Cheers

Hi everyone,

From the OP's description I suspect he has a faulty DVD drive.

However I had an interesting experience trying to fix my sister's computer. Her DVD drive stopped working so I took a spare drive around to her place and fitted it. The new drive also refused to work, so I poked around in the list of programs installed and found a shoddy free photo album/image editing program. Once that was uninstalled the DVD drive work perfectly.

So if a DVD drive suddenly stops working it could be a good idea to check if any new programs have been installed, especially if they use Digital Rights Management. Also run a malware detecting program like Malwarebytes in case a hidden program has interfered with the Windows driver for the DVD.

I Hope this helps someone,
Lindsay
