Downloading directly to an external hard drive

How do I get the content manager `version 3.7 to save downloads directly to the external hard drive I'm using instead of the main copy of Tranz 2012 which is on`C` drive of my desktop computer, when working on my layout I tend to change/add things on the external backup copy of Tranz rather than risking a total blue screen crash and losing everything, I've been working on my layout for seven years since the days of Tranz 2004 it must be over 50 square miles and is well over 70 GB of data and downloads

Thanks for that, by the way I am already using the `2004 DL Station` ( the one with the black background ) What I have been doing is using the ` download file via direct FTP link ) option on the the desk top then importing into the external hard drive copy of tranz using the version of CMP on it, its a long way round to do things but I just want to know if there was someway to save it direct to at external drive ,pity it doesn`t have to option asking where to save the download just like most things one downloads from the internet ,anyway many thanks again for your help

When you get the screen up to save the file you should also see an arrowhead beside the save button, clicking on it will give a list including save as which allows you to choose where the file is saved.

Sound like a good idea will download and try that , BUT will make a BACKUP of the `backup ` just in case ,not that I don't trust Microsoft or Computers :-) !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Thanks regards `stockline `

Do you have a separate shortcut to start Trainz? You should have the original shortcut that starts Trainz on the original installation.
You need to create a new shortcut to point to the new copy of Trainz and start it from there.

If you start Trainz from the C drive, Trainz will look to that installation for the need files.
If you start Trainz with the new shortcut on another drive or partition, Trainz will look for need files at the new location.

I placed a short cut direct from/to the external hard drive (drive E and then downloaded something from the DSL but it still ended up in the C drive version of tranz , dam it ! ,got anymore suggestions pleeese :(

Are you using the Download (Helper) or the Download via FTP option?

Shane

Download Helper ? ,is that the same thing as CMP ver 3.7 ?, if so yes I`m using it , I`m also downloading via the FTP option to my desktop then opening the external drive version of tranz and using its content manager to import KUIDS , for some reason its the only way that I seem to be able to place downloads directly from the DL into trans on my External backup `E Drive`

I am unsure if TS10, TS12 lags if installed on an external HD, connected via a USB wire.

I usually download by "Download Page" via "FTP" using the Black Pages DLS http://www.auran.com/TRS2004/DLS.php, which saves a CDP in my "PC Downloads" folder. Periodicly (when my disc space is filling up) I gather them up and send those thousands of CDP's to an external HD, for a safe keeping, as a back-up library. Some CDP's that have errors, I fix them, and send the repaired CDP's to my external HD for safe keeping.

Thanks for that , honestly I feel its so important to have some sort of external backup if your seriously into working on your own layout , I for instance have been working on and off what I call `My World `using surveyor since 2002 when I first purchased tranz 2004 , over the years I must put in hundreds of hours of work and currently my backup contains 400,000 items/ kuids over 70 GB ! some `built in`but most obtained from the download station, fortunately the compatibility mode setting in most versions of trainz allowed me to import my layout from the original trainz 2004 to the current version which I'm using train 2012 EE edition.
You really have to be careful when creating your own layout as it can become an creative obsession like it is with me,. T

I'm going to try the trains protocol changer to see if that works and also install `SyncToy ` from Microsoft has soon as I can afford yet another portable external hard drive.
Once again out like to thank everybody who has replied to my request for help.

Every few hundred hours or so of laying track, you should save your route as a CDP, (in case your PC goes South) under slightly different names, and keep 2 or 3 progressive versions of them, when you create a 4th copy, delete the first copy, then you'll have 3 progressive copies of the route in transition ... I name first one: Frostebite Falls DEC 2013 ... second version: Frostebite Falls JAN 2014 ... third version: Frostebite Falls FEB 2103 ... fourth version: Frostebite Falls MAR 2103 ... Then I delete: Frostebite Falls DEC 2013, as it is 3 generations obsolete.

Does anyone know if TS12 SP1 lags, or has bad framerates, when installed on an external HD, connected to a cheepo laptop, via a USB wire ?
