Dorky?

Could someone please tell me why quite a few people thing that liking trains is a "dorky" interest? I know quite a few people at my school who think that liking trains is dorky.

Dunno, just stupidity

I have no idea Chris.
I was just talking to a friend on MSN, not that i use it a lot, and they said that trains were 'old school'.
Trains arent dorky, or old school, I think trains are big and beefy. Like, SD70Ms produce 4000hp and 72t of tractive force, or SD90MACs that produce 6000hp and 91t of tracive effort (I think its the SD90MACs, not sure). 8500hp Gas Turbines are big and beefy too. Power is considered dorky is it? If you put it too them that way, they probably won't be 'respectful' towards your knowledge of locomotives. But they will probably struggle with a response.
Remember, you can spend your life worrying about these morons, but don't, it's a complete waste of time, and they are complete wastes as humans.
Eg:
Someone made up a joke that my brother was making a time machine.
Year 7 heard about it.
Now I am the weird one because some git made up a stupid joke that had nothing to do with anything!
A kid, I would like to say his name, so we can all spit on his grave:n: (bit mean, sorry), but I wont. This kid, and his little macho gang, keep coming up to me and saying,
'How's the time machine going?
I would say,
'I'm not making it, my brother is, go ask him!'
They or he wouldnt back off,
'You should know, your his brother'
Until I finally cracked after this conversation happened many times throughout the year and said,
'IF YOU'RE SO WORRIED ABOUT THE STUPID TIME MACHINE! GET OFF YOUR BUM AND MAKE ONE YOURSELF!'
Then, the kid struggled, and replied,
'I can't'
Now what type of response is that:hehe: ?
That leaves him open for comment on his stupidity and lack of skills, but I just left him, lost for words, there's no need to extend the argument, it was pointless in the first place:n: ...

So you see, nobody really knows why trains are 'dorky' or 'old school', but if there was a reason, it would be stupid.
Thats just my way of dealing with morons, what yours? If you dont have one, it is very simple. Think for about 5 seconds, now you have one, see?:hehe:

I dont have the guts to say at school,
'Trains are my thing, okay, and I dont care what anyone else thinks about em, they can stick it where it fits! '
I havent go the power to say that, some of you may, but I just cant take the pointless arguments I'd get into, one is enough...:o

Well, thats it from me, hope you all have a good year at school this year. Keep your scores up so then instead of driving trains, you earn more money by running a rail company!:hehe:

Thanks
Mitch

Loved the story, made me chuckle a few times. There are many hobbies/interest around that anyone can get into that others may not see the point, interest, or reason. Look at Stamp collecting, coin collecting etc now while these are very good money investments some are more then that to those involved. There are many more that I am sure we can all think of. Who cares though, if you like to do something then that's fine, if we start to worry about what others think then the world would be rather boring. What everyone in the World only likes the Simpson's, Aussie Rules Football and so on.

My 2 cents as well.

BTW, I was into Stamp Collecting many years ago, coins never been my thing but my mum loved them. I like the Simpson's too but have not seen them for a while, and as for Aussie Rules Football .... is there any other type of Football ? :hehe:

Go Geelong, the Mighty Cats :hehe:

I don't see where it is any different than liking cars, motorcycles, boats, semi-trucks, etc... Most people don't find those things "dorky". Except there is a significant amount of horsepower that trains have over all of these. The freakin' ground rumbles when a train goes by. How could you not love that?

I don't really care what anyone thinks either way. There is a certain amount of freedom in that mentality. I hang around with hoodlum musicians, deep cynical people, and the like. Often times, at one particular friends house, I tend to crash on their couch since we have many beers when we play music. After having brought my computer over once to show his 6 year old son (who has out grown Thomas the Tank Engine) my Trainz, I am now expected to bring it every time. So now every time I'm there, I get woke up at the crack of dawn by the boy, and have to set up my stuff so he can play on my computer while I have coffee and recuperate. My crazy friends think it's cool.

Hi Ronayne:

Seems to me those who say trains are dorky are the real dorks. They are only interested in instant gratification (shake box twice, open lid, roll out completed kit). They have no idea how to entertain themselves. Zapping endless aliens is entertaining? Constructing a craftsmans level kit (in HO for example) is not only entertaining, its challenging and a definate learning experience. Skill manipulating a joystick will never equal skill creating something in Gmax or making a well designed and attactive route in Trainz.

Kudos to you for using your head for something other then a place to put your hat.

Ben

My friend who came over the other night thought it was a bit boring, because I was doing things that were, well, boring (taking screenshots).
But when I build a small route with a coal tipple and coal unloader, placed an SD40 and 5 hoppers, and said, drive, He now wants me to create him a route! One that climbs a mountain at 1.2% and loops over itself. With a yard at the bottom of the mountain, and a town at the top.
Amazing isnt it.
People think stuff is crap then they give it a go and say,
'Awww, it's alright...'

If I interpreted this correctly (I didn't have time to read it properly), you don't like to show or say that you like trains...

I don't care if people think that i'm a geek , nerd, dork etc., because of my interests. Those that think that of me, can get lost. I don't care if i'm "different" or odd or strange. I will wear shirts with trains or trams on them on a regular basis, and even planned to wear one to an money raising day at school (you get to wear a different shirt).

I usually say "so what, you got a problem with that?". I am not afraid to stand up for what I believe in.

I am also a Boy Scout and while others will call me names that I will not repeat here, I will do acknowledge the fact that I am a Boy Scout and when others laugh I simply say "I got the skills and knowledge that can save lives, do you?" That, more often than not will shut them up.

There are alot of people in this world who just can not learn to respect people for who they are and we must learn to live with them.

More than they know...

 It's a "what everybody is doing" thing...

You are expanding your knowledge with railfanning...history, industry, transportation, technology, innovation, reliability, dependability, schedule, authority, legislation, litigation, imagination, Ecomagination, sounds, vibrations, noise, junk, stuff, things...

They don't know about such things, so that makes them uncomfortable, cause they don't know what to say, add, etc & you can't help that.

I wore-out a railroad hat with a Seaboard Coast Line patch Mom sowed on & carried a Bible in high-school...wearing a camo-fatigue jacket & carrying everything in an ammo bag...

Don't worry about what people say, you might keep it low key unless you have a class assignment on transportation.

You might one day wound up with a good paying job whilst they are working in a gas station...

Good for you. I'm an Eagle Scout, but I received it a LONG time ago (1968). You are learning skills that will help you for many years to come. People can think whatever they want, but you'll find that anyone that is successful marches to his own tune and doesn't worry about peer pressure or being called a dork. If trains is your interest, be proud of it.

I'm certainly proud to be who I am. Better than one of those "cool"/"tough" kids at my school who are likely become drug addicts and alchoholics (and smokers).

I'm proud as well, but I just don't wanna say it to get into pointless argument that make them look stupid. Let them enjoy the only good part of their lives:p .

Thanks

True.

 No, don't even offer a reply to their comments, they will take that as self-justification & bragging...remember, they don't have what you have.

Some will ask questions, share what you know. "Knowing, Sharing, Doing, is the Only Way"(Don Dover, editor of Extra 2200 South, "The Locomotive News Magazine").

As for working at McDonald's, you have to do what you have to do. The Clown has what is called a "standard operations procedure(SOP)" manual that covers every procedure that they do, for every job needed. They have their own proprietary chemicals for cleaning, all the tools needed to do the proper job & serve a properly prepared, fresh product, quickly. Working fast food or restaurant jobs teaches structure, teamwork & leadership.

But fast-food don't make a good living unless you are a manager or part owner of a franchise & that job requires long hours & don't pay well.

Those type jobs can help pay for college. That degree is your "ticket" to a better ride through life.

Sometimes people do get away with smirk comments, but rarely do they even care. They might ask to see if the "rumors" are true, and that I really like trains. I find it a bit funny, because I know there immature, and don't know jack about trains, so when the go criticizing them, it just can't happen without me smirking after-word. For instance, they'll imitate the little child's toy chugging sound and it's funny. It's more over the fact that I model trains. If I didn't model them, it wouldn't even be of a matter. It's the fact that I model them. To them: Model = Toy. Seriously, they think the largest and engine costs is $10.00, and they are kids with three iPods. Heck, I don't even have a phone! In fact, locomotives cost, on average, $110.00 in my scale. (HO Scale)

Even though they're the same age, they are just so stupid! Why bother criticize something you can't unless you have to use common bullying? They don't even bother me unless I bother them. I believe one time they were trying to tease me and they had to stop because I started laughing.

Trust me, there's no point in educating them either. They don't listen. You'll just ruin my fun! ;)

Cheers,
Joshua

Thank you. I just had my eagle scout project approved by my troop committee the other day. It is my goal to reach eagle before I go to National Jamboree this year.

@backyard: I don't mean they're going to work there temporerily, I mean they plan to work fast food for life. It just doesnt make any sense.

Matt

You know I've never knew there were that many Eagle Scouts or Boy Scouts on the forum as I have seen others mention it here or there.

Over here you can get a (all HO scale) PA for $45, a doodlebug for $60 and a UP F3 for $65. The most expensive model trains I have is a UP GP9 and GP38.

On the original topic, trains are better than these other things kids today tend to prefer. A train is faster (usually), more powerful and larger and stronger than a car. Even more than one of the hotted up piles of junk (no offense anyone) that alot of teenagers drive and love. Trains are stonger and more efficient than trucks (and they can carry a heck of alot more in one trip than a truck could in 10). They also cause less damage to the environment than trucks and don't claim as many lives. (Why the heck am I going on about trucks!? :o ). Anyway, point made.

*Whoo* I've been waiting to get that out of my system for years...
