Discovery of screenshots from 18 years ago

I was looking in my archive folders for something entirely different yesterday when I came across some long-forgotten screenshots from Trainz. I think my first version was whatever came before TRS 2004, as I remember upgrading to 2004. The route featured here is still in progress as of this year and has gone though TRS 2009, 12, TANE, 19 and now TRS 22/ Trainz Plus! It has been vastly expanded and probably most of the track and stations have been replaced and upgraded via electrification in on the main lines, rebuilding junctions with flyovers, straightening out and a lot of the scenes here are virtually unrecognisable. I have had spells of 5 years or so where I haven't used Trainz although I use it much more regularly now. I built large parts of fictional London Underground lines in the spring and also created a system of historic docks but there is a lot still to do. This is one of those personal routes that will never be finished!

I was wondering if anyone knows where the route British Commuter came from? I was a rural S-shaped line that was built into TRS 2004 or the previous version. I made a clone of that and extended it greatly, probably by over 100 miles or so! The first extension was through what was originally the terminus to a new fictional seaside resort (Bridsey), with an 8-platform terminus and adjacent large railway works for stabling and servicing multiple units. The original line was sadly dismantled during my development of the route's story as having been a victim of the Dr Beeching cuts of the 1960s. Like many in the real Britain, the trackbed is now a footpath/cycle way.

Route map 13 Feb 2006. You can see where the original S-shaped line ran on the left. This was closed in favour of the newer and more direct line that went above the original with no junction. The only station not closed was the end of the old line at Ravenscross (centre left), where I built an extension (back story - an old Victorian era line by a rival railway company).

9 Jul 2006. The payware Class 170 (Turbostar), along with the Electrostar class 357 and 377 were well ahead of their time in terms of the quality, with most other assets from that era looking flat, with low resolution textures and non-transparent windows. I am very glad I bought those at the time, as the website that sold them (whose name I have forgotten) closed down over a decade ago I think.

An interesting one, I genuinely can't think where on earth this was. I think it must be a completely different route...I will see if I can root it out (pardon the pun). I built a similar elevated pier railway and seafront gardens to the left of Bridsey a couple of years ago so I clearly had that idea already. The Clarence Pier Pavilion (blue and yellow tower) and brutalist multistorey car park were my custom buildings. The latter is still in good working order, albeit low quality by contemporary standards but the pier must be one of my old assets that I could not repair, like my Southampton tower block sets. I have made new models of both in Blender but found it is far easier for me to start working on something than it is to finish.

Another scene I don't recognise.

july2006-004.jpg

Bridsey had a roller coaster but I think this must be a different route.

Pier with a working railway. 16 years later, I built a similar pier near Bridsey but had forgotten about this one.

Another totally unrecognisable shot. I will have a root through my old stuff to see if I can unearth any backup copies of the map in the various old KUID folders I had. This has all been left in an old temporary folder - when I got a new HDD so new Windows build, I put the non-software contents of the old C drive into a temp folder for sorting out later.

I hope this blast from the past generates some feelings of nostalgia amongst my fellow Trainz long timers. Trainz is like the Hotel California - you can check out any time you like but you can never leave (I mean that in a positive way -once a Trainzer, always a Trainzer :)

Edit - clarification, only the first two shots are of the Bridsey and Shercaster Railway)

From that small route 20 years ago, I have built a huge network. I have been giving Aylescombe (where that old 158 was pictured) a spruce up today (literally). The older parts of my route are full of billboard trees and some are even partially transparent! I have applied PBR textures and replaced the old trees with the st_rmm speedtrees, which look a lot better. I have replaced the built in (from 2004) low resolution bridges. I have also added more buildings. It's still not finished by any means but looks a lot better I think.
The station buildings are relatively low resolution as well but they will do for now.
In a wider sense, as 2024 comes to a close then I have made a lot of progress this year. Building three new underground lines (Chiselmark, Southale and Orbital Line), a ferry and a huge complex of docks. I wanted to create along the lines of the DLR but there isn't really anything in terms of stations or vehicles so I have instead used Steve Flanders' excellent Liverpool Overhead Railway structures. I have expanded the SE region as well.
Here are some more screenshots of my fairground and other parts of the route.

Compare this to my original post.

Bridsey funfair. Sadly, the roller coasters are non functional but the other rides are animated and look really cool.

Holcott, a lovely resort with gardens containing an event.

Holcott, which will soon have a functional pier railway.

Outer docks and the Overhead Railway system

Pierhead and Elleshouse in the outer docks. There was once a ferry but was discontinued due to lack of use after the docks became redundant due to containerisation (Birtol Container Terminal)to the east.

2024-12-21-23.png

Elleshouse is near the edge of the capital so the Tube trains run on the surface rather than in tunnel. The station is shared with the North Salt mainline railway.

2024-12-21-43.png

The abandoned trackbed of the original built-in line is now a footpath although the start and end are still in use for other lines needing to access Bridsey or Ravenscross.

2024-12-21-50.png

Thanks to @steveflanders
My use of these station, track and vehicles is a 'what-if' scenario, where instead of being scrapped in the 1950s, the overhead railway network was retained, probably with new rolling stock such as the BR Class 502/503.

2024-12-21-47.png

This time last year, there was nothing here at Wadgreeen apart from a through line but Wadgreeen Junction is now an important interchange between the mainline and the Chislemark line to the centre of the city.

2024-12-21-54.png

The new Inner Docks, now main used for heritage and housing/office space rather than their original industrial warehouse function.

2024-12-21-55.png

Queenstown, a new station with three levels of track! The lower one will be on one of the subsurface underground lines, the mainline at the middle and the overhead railway at the top. The latter has a seperate station at the top right of this image.

2024-12-21-59.png

Welwick is bypassed by the mainline to the left but the parallel DC Metro system has an interchange with the underground Southale Line.

2024-12-21-62.png

Barnard Meadow has the most complex junction on the subsurface network, with any platform being able to access either of the two exit tracks (Southale or Orbital line). It has many flying junctions to reduce disruption by avoiding conflicting train paths. With trains every 3 minutes then this is vital in order to keep tings flowing.

2024-12-21-64.png

The new Orbital Line does exactly what the name suggests.

2024-12-21-70.png

South Saltferry has ferries across the very wide river - the small Fast Cat with its terminal seen here on the left and a large vehicle ferry. The railway station is some distance from the waterfront so there is a local tram to connect the two modes of transport.

Apologies for the high number of screenshots. With hindsight I should have taken less in the first place. I hope you enjoyed this journey through my realm.

This was a great find, Gary!

I came across some old screenshots myself I had tucked away on some backup CDs. The same route still exists today and I started the project in January 2004. It too ran through the various Trainz versions and has survived pretty well, all things considered. Like you, I've been renovating and rebuilding sections and even replaced whole portions with new baseboards. It's really amazing seeing the quality improvements not only in the assets over the years but also in our building capabilities. Like renovating a house, fixing up one area means we can't stop there and have to continue on to the rest.

My current project is adding procedural grass and plants and then I'll go back and replace the textures with PBR ones. This project so far, while it's moving along pretty well, is still a long slog that will keep me busy for a while. The route in total is about 200 miles end to end and can take up to 6 hours to drive if the AI cooperates.

Wow John, you might need an Airplane or Chopper sooner than later to get around your Route. Love the back story, keep it going Sir.

From a Smokey and Burning up Southern California.

If you have any Rain back there, we sorely need it out her

Only .16 of inch since June.!

Maybe I'll throw in a chopper later on. Right now, I still have some bare areas of areas I've replaced.

I've been very concerned about California! We too have had very little rain back here as well and we've been under Red Flag warnings off and on this winter which never happens! The local reservoir, and there are five of them in my area, is down to puddles in the deeper parts.

Scary times.

Sorry to hear about that John,

Right now,

I say a prayer for both of us....

180000 folks here are out of their homes. Going to take a long time to recover from this tragedy!

Those Santa Anna winds are deadly , when you get conditions like that it's almost impossible to contain . I remember the year after we'd been to LA some goon set off a bottle rocket, it landed on a house with a wood shingle roof and it burnt down most of the suburb. You can build to make houses more fireproof , but our 2019 fires burnt down whole country towns here in Australia , it's usually embers being blown into gutters starting fires in front of the main blaze , and once it becomes a firestorm , it's terrifying,
