Disable antivirus

I have AVG 8.5.423 antivirus program and have been unable to find where to disable this program to load TS2009. Does anyone know how to disable this program?

What I do is click Start, type in msconfig, click Startup box. In Startup find any avg items and untick the box (or boxes), reboot pc and AVG will not be loaded. Don't forget to retick box when you have finished so that AVG loads automatically every time you startup. Works for me! John.

Another way which worked for me OK when loading TS2009 and applying SP2.....

First disconnect from the internet!

then...

Open AVG user interface.
Go to "Components" menu.
Select "Resident Shield".
At the bottom of the page untick "Resident Shield Active"
Click "Save changes"

Don't forget to activate this again before you reconnect the Internet.

You do not need to disable AVG 8.5, TS09 will install with it on, Win7 will update with it on, I have done both.

From what I can see, Windows 7 is no different than Vista or XP. The simple way, and I do mean simple, is to click on the arrow next to those little icons on the bottom right. There's a speaker and a couple of other things. By clicking the arrow, all the running programs should appear.

Right click the one that looks like a four segment Rubicks cube. (Yellow,blue,green, red)

Click Exit.

That's all there is to it.

AVG will restart when you reboot.

Thanks guys for your help. Whitepass, I have WinXP but I took your suggestion and installed TS2009 without disabling AVG 8.5. It seems to have installed OK. If it did not install properly, wouldn't there be some sort of error message?

I also installed TS09 without disabling AVG antivirus, as well as having AntiVir running at the same time. No problem there either and I guess you would have known if there would have been an issue with AVG running when installing TS09 either by error message or crashing or locking up the install.

AFAIK doing this just exits the AVG "front end" and does not stop AVG running in the background (check out Task Manager / Processes and you will still see AVG processes running).

AVG is not as bad as some Anti Virus packages when it comes to causing problems on installs/upgrades. Auran suggest that you disconnect from the internet and disable your AV program before new installs or upgrades and as a general rule this is good advice - some AV software (even the expensive stuff) will cause problems and we can't reasonably expect Auran to test installs against every single version of every AV program available.

Meaning no disrespect, but why would you have free AVG 8.5 in the first place? - when there are atleast two other Free anti-virus programs that are far better...

Avira can be turned OFF & ON by just right clicking on small Avira icon on the bottom right of your Toolbar, and then clicking on - unticking; AntiVir Guard enable.
Then to turned back on, just re-ticking; AntiVir Guard enable. (When a tick is there, it's enabled. When the ticks not there, it's disabled).
I use NOD32 on my main PC's and Avira on my backup PC's. Neither A/V has let me down yet !!!

itareus, You're right. It worked with version 7 however. As I never turn of anything when I'm installing stuff unless specifically asked, it's so long since I've done it.

meatloaf74, I'll read those links. I found that version 8 of AVG is nowhere as good a 7 was. It often reports errors in runtime, but when you do a scan, nothing shows up.

Us old stick-in-the-mud timers have to be careful. When someone on this forum mentioned Malwarebytes (which I'd never heard of), I read some reviews on cNet, the only place I really trust, and discovered that my favourite Spybot was relegated to last in the ratings. Those older programs working on older technologies have become bloated, sluggish and next to useless.

Having read the reviews, I still think one should use both an antivirus and antimalware program. AVG failed on malware in the tests, but they forgot to say that this feature is not available in the free version. They were really testing something that wan't there.

I'm inclined to think that AVG still stacks up if you back it up with something like Malwarebytes. Let each program do what they're best at unless you want an all in one program - me thinks.

Here's the official way to disable the Solo Antivirus. It wass was not obvious to me so I post it for any Solo users.

Open the Solo antivirus scanner from Windows desktop and choose "options" button. From the options window uncheck "Load sentry on startup" to disable
