Direction of track in 2010

Hi. I've been reading tutorials on Surveyor and they keep telling me to place the track in the direction that trains will primarily go to help the AI in navigation. All of these tutorials seem to be based around Trainz 2004 or 2006.

Does this still apply in 2010 or are the AI a little smarter now and follow the signals and track direction markers?

That's the ideal way to lay track according to the book, not allways practicable when it's a single line is it? Take no notice and use track direction markers where necessary.

My issue is with the complex trackwork I'm trying to lay, it's VERY hard to lay it all in the correct direction!

When we built the DHR, the entire distance of 54 miles was single track. We had no problem creating sessions involving the entire length, despite that there was no signalling involved.

From this experience I think track direction can be ignored.

One thing we did find was that on unsignalled track locos run at half speed and to correct this, the loco mass had to be increased considerably, we allocated two 'heavy' locos for the sessions.

Track direction markers work just fine. Signals placed in the right spots in my experience work fine. It's possible to use Train/Track priority to assign one or more trains (or a type of train) to use certain tracks when possible, but still allow them to use other tracks when needed, and there's always Navigate Via Trackmark.

Just keep in mind that if you use signals, then trains may not want to enter areas that aren't signaled yet.
