Dense trees.

I'm currently planning trackwork for the southern part of Coal County.

After a night of long-distance running with a friend, I've found some inspiration; moderately winding track along a nice river and lush greens all around within a nice, gentle valley. How does one go about populating large areas with a variety of trees and yet keep the framerates up? An excellent example would be Zorronov's NYC Hudson River route (haven't seen him around for some time now though)

Ahh, some people have such talent.

Cheerio,

I'm pretty sure that the trees effect the framerates when you are looking sideways from up in the treetops...but in clear patchs and looking in line with the rails, low level viewing, on the mainline they get better.

I too need much advice on dense forests of trees vs framerates

Right. But we don't keep looking sideways or flying into the treetops while driving, so here we are; two Trainzers wanting to know how to make dense tree areas. :)

I cut and pasted patchs of hundereds of between 6-10 difference trees...it looked fantastic...as I custom raised and sunk some trees partially in the ground (to make bush's), and used the "randomly rotate assets" in the surveyor drop down box... but I believe this huge cut and paste of trees severly effects framerates ... more than placing thousands of individual trees ? ? ?

Wide Cover Forest Splines

I believe Zorronov's used one of my Forest Cover Splines on his NYC Hudson River route in the shot above. They are reasonably light weight in poly count and don't seem to hit frames too hard. You might give one of them a try. There are about 20 different Forest types covering the entire country. The area you are modeling would need the Oak/Hickory forest below.

You will find a useful tutorial about how to use my splines on my site at HERE

Thank you dave. I'll try that tonight. Do you happen to also have static trees of higher detail for the areas that are close to the tracks?

Nicholas.

You may want to try some of my Perfect Series trees since they are built on a different structure than my regular trees. There are about 300 different files and they are all LOD enabled. Just search for Perfect_ in Trainz Version TRS2004 and the TITLE filter.
