DEM and HOG help

I am trying to make DEM and HOG work and have come to a point which does not match the tutorial on freepages site. I have downloaded 2 versions of the DEM program from the usna web site. Neither of those versions is identical to the tutorial.

When I get to the point of overlaying tiger data onto the DEM data, my menu choices don't match the tutorial. It says to select the Overlay menu item and then select "All Tiger". I don't have an All Tiger item and can't find anything else that works.

I have tried to search the forum but get no results from either "DEM" or "HOG". Can someone tell me what I can do?

Thanks
Jim

Since I don't know what program you're using, I have no idea how to help you get it working.
If you're using the Wewain tutorial, is there a reason you can't use MicroDEM? A source is listed in the tutorial, and it's the version most of us are familiar with, so we can do a better job of advisisng you.
So what are the names of the programs you have, and what's the link to go see tham?

Tiger Data

Hi Jimbak

Microdem is constantly changing. To get Tiger data onto your map now you can click on the Overlay Tab and then click on the Manage Overlay tab. Check the box for Tiger Data and then click on the Tiger Options Box. Click on the Others Tab and be sure that railroads are selected. You can check whatever else you want to see and then click OK and OK. You should now have tiger data on your map if you have set up Microdem properly.

By the way you should reinstall the 40 meg version, scince it has all the help files.

That worked beautifully after I placed the tiger files in the correct directory. Thank you so much for the help.

I'm almost there. It took some juggling because I'm using TRS2006 and not 2004 as described in the tutorial. The DEM program is updated from the tutorial, as well.

The only problem left (I think) is that the tiger display does not appear on the baseboard. It appears in the minimap of Surveyor but not on the baseboard itself. Any ideas?

G'day jimbak123,

Although it should not be that case, since you say you are using HOG (and I must assume that you have, therefore, installed it in accordance with the instructions), the most likely cause of a lack of appearance of Tiger lines on the terrain of your map is the result of the HOG textures not being properly installed into your Trainz installation. Since you are using 2006, it may be that they are not in the right place. HOG, after all was written with 2004 in mind and some things did change with the 'upgrade'. I think you might actually have to 'commit' them. Don't forget to do both sets...

The hog file installation for 04 and 06 is entirely different. If you have 06 ignore the install instructions that come with the hog files.
For 06, after you have them downloaded, just open 06 and then click File-import content, find the Hog folder and click on it and select open. That's it as 06 will now install them in the correct place. The only other thing you need to do is click the open for edit tab and commit them, unless you have auto commit set up in settings in that case they will be committed as soon as you start surveyor.

I just did that as a result of Jerker's reply. It worked. I now have roads ond water and things on the ground.

I'm such a newbie at this that I do more stumbling around than walking in a straight line. Thank you all for the help.

Great, glad you got it working and are going th DEM method. I wish more route builders would, it would make Trainz a lot better.

After you download the hog texture.zip from http://www.fishlips.net/Trainz/Hog Textures/

You cannot import them directly from the .zip

Make a folder on your desk top then open the hog.zip and copy and paste the hog files into the new folder that you just made. Then open cmp and go to File/import content and select the new folder and select Ok.

In the import process, it asked me if I wanted to import from all folders. I answered yes to this and it worked fine. I then had to select all of the imported assets and commit them. (Sounds like some legal mental health process.) Since you have had success with this process, you are already familiar with this.

I don't know much about all of this. I just followed the instructions in the Wewain tutorial and in the DEM and HOG instructions. When I had problems, I simply asked here and got great help. I hope this helps you.

hi,
I've the same kind of issue, but with .gnd file generated by HOG, in the tutorial for 2004, it is said to copy the file in custom/map directory where players map are supposed to be. this is not the case with 2008, and I'm not sure how I should integrate this .gnd file into the game ?

i've found some .gnd files in the local directory of trs2008, but files name are unclear

thanks
