Dealing with updates and different versions of assets

I'm wondering what happens when you download a new version of an asset. Does it delete the old version from CM whatever or as I suspect does the local database get cluttered with old versions.

Does it matter?

Well if you're running on an SSD yes it does and even with a conventional hard drive clutter can be expensive.

Traditionally the less data in a database the faster it runs as well.

Can anyone suggest a selection to identify old versions when the latest version is also present?

Thanks

John, I asked a similar question the other day.
The conlusions reached were:
Yes the old version remains in the database.
Care must be taken prior to deleting the older asset, as dependencies way exist which, of course, will affect other assets.
Use of the 'Disable' function, prior to deleting an asset, will bring up dependency issues which may be present.

A search of

Location>Local
Obsolete>True

will bring up the locally installed obsolete assets. If you highlight an asset then RMB>View Asset Versions you can confirm the versions installed.

Wheras :
Location>Local
Out of date>true

will identify those assets installed locally for which an update is available on the DLS, but not yet downloaded.

My database now contains 1,500 fewer assets.

I take it that Obsolete assets are no longer useable. For example, at one time I made great use of Tree52, Tree52M and others in that Auran (I think) series. Now they are marked as obsolete, which is a pity because I cannot find more than a few trees which look good. I'm working in TS2010 and TS2009.

Obsolete versions are not usable, as you have noticed, unless you remove the later version(s) of the asset. You may need to do a database repair after though.

Just out of curiosity, is there any way to get all of the useless updates off of the update lists,I have abouty 25 that will not load or worse.

You can delete the locally installed bad updated versions, but the asset in question will show an 'Out of Date' icon. Only N3V can permanently remove the bad updates from the server(s).
