dcc joystick

G'day everyone!
Not sure if this exists already, but if not, it would be really cool if for train simulators like trainz there could be like a dcc knob/box/thing to usb kind of joystick that you could plug into the computer for controlling trains in dcc mode (instead of mouse and keyboard). Would add another level of control and fun I think for those who like to drive trainz in that mode.

PS-I would happily make one myself, but I haven't the slightest clue on how to do it lol:confused:

See: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=2YK5_y1LzHk

I'd never come out ... until my legs fell asleep :hehe:

I have often dreamed of building something like this ... but untill then use Dragon Speech Voice Recocnition or Key Board commands to control Trainz

I think by using several voice recognition programs you can speak into a microphone, and say the KB commands: H-horn, B-bell, :-Ditchlights, S stop, F-forward, Q-release, WWWWWWWW-throttle up 8 times, XXXXXXXX throttle down 8 times, AAAAAAAAAAAAAAAA-brake application full ... etc ...

Look up RailDriver.

RailDriver is nice for "Cab Mode driving, even if it is a bit over priced for my taste, but I'v often wanted something like the OP mentions, a simple "power pack" style dial throttle controller, for use during DCC mode operations.
--I think a lot more users use DCC mode than will admit on the forums, for fear of ridicule by the purist.

Basic functions: Direction, Speed, Emergency Brake, Horn, Bell, Couple/uncouple, and Junction/Switch throw.
Advanced functions: Driver/train select, Mini-map select, HUD select, Pause/unpause.

This might work...

I know people use it in Surveyor, and my bro uses it for 3d-modeling... I tried it once and I ended up spinning in circles, but then again it might be just me not being used to the device.

But... I don't see why a high-end quality joystick wouldn't work. Many of these have programmable buttons on them and their driver functions can be customized in the driver interface on the control panel.

Just use the numeric keypad on your keyboard for Cab mode and just W X S A for DCC Mode.

Rail Driver is ace for cab driving but complete overkill for DCC. What the previous poster showed is exactly what we want! The ability to just plug this into a USB port and drive off in Trainz would be fantastic.

It should be easy to do with an Arduino Micro. It has the ability to emulate a mouse and keyboard at the same time. Just connect a pot and a few buttons, write some C++ code and your done. I just got all the parts and should have something in a few days.

Another option is to do what I do. Get a 360 controller. Add the Pinnacle Game Profiler software. Set the Profiler to send keyboard commands to Trainz as desired. Works great.

G'day, I use a Logitech dual action game pad it can be set up for dcc or cab mode and comes with it's own software for keyboard mapping.
It's cheap and you set it up to suit your own needs and you can save your setups and select them for use as needed.
