Custom DEM Request

Hello all,

I plan to start work on a fairly large prototypical route using TRS 2010, and I was wondering if somebody out there might be willing to create a DEM model for me. I am unaware of the process to do so, and from what I already know, it seems you have to be a computer wizard to do so.

I will be modeling the Indiana Rail Road from Indianapolis to Sullivan, IN, with branch lines at Bloomington, Linton, Dugger, and Sullivan. Altogether, roughly about 150 miles of track. I have the above DEM route which was made for TRS 2004 and it worked in 2006, but to my understanding, it will not work in the 2010 version. If I am mistaken, please correct me, as I would be more than happy to use the existing DEM, but from what I've been told, it would be incompatible with the new version of the sim.

Thank you for reading.

Do you actually have those three versions of Trainz? I see nothing beside your username indicating this.

If you use 2006 to create a CDP of the route and then import it into 2010 it should work just fine (providing there aren't any errors in content).

I had 2004 on a now-dead computer, I'm currently using 2006, and I'll be purchasing 2010 in a couple of days. I've been away from here for several months, so I'm not sure how the version indications up-top work. The computer I run Trainz on is always off-line, thus I access the these forums and all other internet sites from my other computer. The DLS doesn't list my 2004 and 2006 serial numbers anymore, which confuses me. I suppose it could be because I'm using a different computer, or maybe because I've been inactive for probably about a year.

The computer you are using has no bearing on what versions show up top. That is controlled by entering your serial number while viewing your profile.

Over on the left, under Trainz, is the link for Serial Number. In the middle panel of that page are all your registered serial numbers for each version. If you registered them previously, they should be there. If not, then perhaps a visit to the Help Desk is in order.

2004 and 2006 support has been discontinued. That's probably why they aren't visible on the DLS. Once you purchase 2010, you will again have access to the full DLS. Be sure to register that version also.

Indiana Railroad? Awesome! I did a little research on that line long ago. Mostly ex-Milwaukee track, originally Chicago, Terre Haute & Southeastern until 1921. Neat little property. I like their big-boilered 2-8-0's (MILW C-7 class, IIRC). MILW mostly ran SD7's and SD9's through there, from the photos I found. There doesn't seem to be much info on it out there, though. The books on the Milwaukee Road that I have seen only mention it in passing or skip it entirely in their rush to talking about the 1800's and then the transcontinental electrification. It's actually easier to find information on IC's coal-hauling in Kentucky.

I'll anticipate this project.

Nope - it will work just fine. Although I use TS2010 exclusively for route building i still find it easier to create HOG DEM routes in 04 and import the result into TS2010.

The route will probably import OK the only issue might be deformed texture along the boundary lines between 'boards'. Some routes get this, some don't.

If the terrain IS deformed simply delete the route from 2010 and re-install it but DO NOT open it.

Create a new one-board route, save it then re-open the new route and merge the DEM route to it. that simple one-step process will sort the issues out.

If you simply must have a 5 meter grid just update trackside boards as you work along the route. Leaving background boards at 10m will look fine and make a significantly smaller route cdp wise...

Indiana Railroad? Awesome!

Glad to see I'm not the only one who thinks so! Just to clarify, I'm referring the modern-day freight railroad with reporting mark INRD, not the interurban company of the 1930's. I will certainly post progress reports as time progresses. The funny thing is, I've actually worked with this route 3 times already; once in TRS 2004, and twice in 2006. The first time, I had a hard drive failure about 20 miles in. The second time, the route got deleted about 50 miles in, and the third time, content errors and corruptions rendered the route almost completely useless after 130 miles and countless hours of trackwork.

It is frustrating to look ahead at doing this huge route AGAIN, all 150 miles of it, but I am excited to see all the possibilities with Trainz 2010. And hats off to the fine folks at Jointed Rail and RRMods for their stunning Indiana Rail Road motive power. Also, a big thanks goes out to you, Dermmy, for your fantastic IPL hoppers.
