The Clinchfield Railroad was constructed in the early 1900's. That means that the tunnels, cuts, and fills are over a hundred years old. The cut seen here however, is only about 40 years old. in the 1970's, the Clinchfield had the desire to run longer trains. This meant that longer trains would have to pass here a Rocky Siding. But something stood in the way of the sidings expansion, Third Rocky Tunnel. In 1977, the tunnel was daylighted to allow expansion of the siding. I went with a different rock texture to show this difference in age.
For anyone curious, this is why there is no Third Rock Tunnel on the map above, only 1st, 2nd, and 4th.
