Crew Alerters?

Hello Jointed Rail,

So, quick question. I'm sure this is tied into the limitations of the game itself and its programming, much like the start up/shut down/isolate problem. Has JR looked into the possibility of implementing an alerter into their cab? Admittedly, it's not for everyone, but I think it adds to the immersion. How hard would it be to program one in? Just curious.

not hard at all, but thus far i have not added one because it might be an annoyance to some. we have discussed perhaps applying a difficulty level that would include other procedures to follow like having to use an alerter or set circuit breakers etc.

That's a great idea NS37. I often, when I get bored, start pressing the alerter in the Dash 9's, even though it doesn't do anything. I think it would be possible create an Alerter Rule for sessions. If not, make an option in the locomotive settings that can be toggled on and off using the "Query" tool in surveyor. I'm sure it would be the same concept as the rule that stops the train automatically when you overspeed.

I think it would add to experience to have alerters and other little operational details. But then again I'm one who would try to clear condensation out of the cylinders at start-up if I could. :hehe:

Cheers.

Ditto trainman. I think the RBMN units are getting the most work on my Colorado route, and my Missouri route, just for the opening doors and such. Yes, I open and close doors behind me as I walk the consist to start each one up. I wish I could open the hood doors and get hold of the layshaft while cranking the engine. Hell, I've even got blank inspection sheets I fill out. I'll also sit in idle and run 3 until the trainline builds up on the head-end box readout, even though the game has probably released the brakes already on the train. I'm all for the realism. If it's going to be a sim, let's simulate it.

I love the idea of having the difficulty levels. I think the idea of going through and keeping track of the various systems is great. Trains's not moving? Is your generator field on? Oops. Justin, if you guys do go with the various difficulty levels, I wouldn't hesitate to buy them.

it is something i am certainly considering. i can't say that i am up for doing the modeling and coding required to go through the whole process of going back and opening the hood, priming fuel, starting the engine, but you never know. things like generator field switch and alerter are very much more likely to be in the future however.
