creating interactive platforms?

Can someone point me in the right direction for any tutorial (it there is one) which will show me how to create a platform using invisible platforms? What I'm looking for in particular is the sort of platform where one of the tracks terminates partway down a platform and the actual platform is extended across so that you have a stepped platform.
My problem is that as the platform has 2 combined segments of different widths, how do I set up the invisible platform to allow for this change? Giving me one short platform and one long one. I hope someone understands what Im trying to say

I would suggest trying two invisible stations, one for each segment of your platform, and naming them appropriately. I seem to remember doing this some time ago for a long platform which I wanted to split into (eg.) platform 1a and platform 1b to allow two multiple units to use it. This would have been in TRS2004 - on an earlier computer.
