You need to record an 8-bit mono sound (single channel). You can use various devices to record or create your sounds ranging from actual locomotives, or in your case EL and subway cars. The other way is to use a synthesizer, but I'm not sure how well that would work. Just remember the required parameter mentioned above. I suggest you dissect one of the sound files already installed on your system.
