CP C&M Subdivision

We all know I was making another shameless Portal reference, even though the internetz is way too filled with them, and WCL seeming to think the cake actually exists. We all know the cake is a lie.

Techny. Yes, I know the overpass for the UP New Line is way off. I'm still looking for the best kind of bridge.

North Glenview, this time viewed from south of the platforms. Still working on this area.

North of Deerfield. Also still a work in progress.

Near the south end of the Wadsworth siding. Also still working on this.

Nice....And WOW  Thats like one big straight stretch....Looks like an airport runway :hehe:

Yeah. I might cut down some baseboards near the Wisconsin border to boost performance. I'm not exactly concerned about detail on any of these really long stretches where even the slow freights will be going through at 40-50 mph. I've been doing almost all of my scenery work on the Metra section and near downtown milwaukee.

Just a question: If I decided to do scenery for the UP line from Bensonville to Techny (and the Bensonville yard), would it be far to just not add scenery from Sturtevant to MKE? I'm just not liking that one section

Quick Update

I've encountered a minor setback on the project. The internal hard drive on my Macbook pro (I use Bootcamp for windows) died about a week ago. LUCKILY, I keep trainz on an external hard drive, so none of the actual files were affected. I also backed up the internal hard drive, so hopefully all the registry files are still there.

The timing isn't so bad either - I will be traveling for all of next week, and would have gotten very little done anyways. Another hidden benefit is that my under-investment in anti-virus software (I don't use windows for any work, only video games, including Trainz) had been causing downgraded performance recently, which made work frustratingly slow (consequently I was getting less done on the route).

So once I reinstall Windows and get Trainz working again (hopefully during this week), I'll be making up for lost time.

Another update on the hard drive

I reinstalled windows on the new hard drive, and I'm gonna be going to the Apple Store tomorrow to get the Apple Windows software. Until I have that, the wireless card won't work when I run windows, which in turn means that I can't log in to Steam, which (this is a long list) means that I can't get the windows registry files.

Also, when I tried to boot content manager, it instantly closed out. Is this something I should be concerned about? I'd hate to have to reinstall trainz and then move my content over to the new install (which is probably a bad idea and won't work. I'm still checking around the forums for answers to these questions).

As a side note, while I was bored the other day I made a Google Earth file showing the full extent of the project, as well as rough estimates of my progress. It's pretty informative. Send me a pm with an e-mail I can send the google earth files to.

Final Hard drive update

I finally got around to getting trainz up and running again today (getting other files, including stuff for my job in order is obviously a higher priority than trainz). Everything is working, which means the route is still going (this is much better than having to shoot my hard drive with a shotgun out of frustration).

Another benefit is that the new windows install is nice and free of annoying stuff that slow it down (I don't keep anything important on my windows partition, so spyware/virus protection isn't worth the investment), and low framerates had been an issue for over a month before the hard drive conked out. I'm expect better progress now thanks to that.

Screenshots this Sunday. new stuff!

Edit: Monday morning due to internet connection issues.

None of these are done yet, but I guess this is my way of saying: Yes, Bensenville Yard is coming to a machine near you soon! I'm still laying track out to the yard, but it is coming.

It's something you just get used to. Most people tend to use just single track splines (and by that I mean track - you don't actually use splines e.g. platform splines) and hold down the shift key when placing them so they don't automatically connect to each other. I tend to favor using the multi-track track splines for straight areas so spacing stay consistent, and then I use single track splines for curves and connect them to the straight tracks.

A lot of it is just sort of looking at the track and saying "this looks straight" or "this looks like a consistent curve". Also, there's a tool for measuring curve radius in the advanced track menu. Unfortunately (at least in TS09) it's set in meters and can't be switched to American units.

Also, considering there's (I think) three or four people doing various Metra routes right now for Trainz, why isn't there a good bi-level functional cab car? The only Metra bi-levels I found on the DLS were from TS04 and non-functional in TS09. I've tried several times, but Gmax is just annoying.

Hey Im so absence minded at times lol. I forgot I did a small trick for the metra cab car. So the cab car is not runable no problem. I did a small invisible loco romoved the engine sounds and added a metra cab car K3LA horn sound and bell sounds. And also since the cars are really the old pullman cars I did a invisible loco for that too. PM me your email ill send them your way.;)

Considering that I will be returning to school in less than a week, and considering the less-than-expected progress I made over this summer, I am currently trying to find a website to host the incomplete version i.e. my current progress. The files are simply too big for the DLS.

I know that's a disappointment to a lot of people who are looking forward to the completed work, but I'm hoping that at least a semi-complete version will be worthwhile. Potentially either I or somebody else with more experience building routes will come back and finish this.

ok, i have a few questions about the content you are using.
-what kind of road is that where did you get it?
-what platform is that with the safety tarmac?

BTW- the route looks really good. nice detail.
:udrool: :mop: :mop:

I originally was using the stock roads, but then as I progressed I used the YARN roads. Just search "YARN" on the DLS and you should get them

-what platform is that with the safety tarmac?

There are four platform types, all named "Platform Low Asphalt #" (# being 1-4). Based on what CMP says on my computer, gfisher did 1-3, while perrock did 4. I think I downloaded the platforms off of the Trainz Commuter Rail forum.

Project is online!

Here's a link to the current version of the .cdp file:

http://www.mediafire.com/?br58esogry6urvf

And now, of course, the dreaded list of dependencies. Most of the current 1,000+ (actually around 1,050) dependencies are available on the DLS, however, some of them aren't, so I'll list those below:

1. The safetran and Searchlight signal packs, available at jointedrails.
2. A number of scenery files that I downloaded from Trainz Commuter Rail.

In order to do signaling for some of the areas that are CTC in real life, I initially tried to edit the stock signals to be on the left side of the tracks. I tried to upload these, but something tells me Auran didn't want them on the DLS. I later deleted most of these signals, but a few might be remaining. Just use other signals in their place.

I haven't gone in and cleaned up a lot of dependencies where I only use something once or twice - this is something I'll be doing soon. I just wanted to have something online so there'd be something online.

ok thanks, the platform I have it, i just dont have the one by PerRock, so idk there are different platforms out there, thanks tho!!!

Just a quick note, if anyone has already downloaded the route and tried using it (and downloaded any missing dependencies), can they please send me a PM so I know it works? That way I know everything's okay with the files and I can rest easy about it.
