Copying Partial Routes

Is there any way to copy partial routes from one route to another in TRS2004?

I have some stations created using modular assets that I'd like to copy into a new route rather than have to rebuild them if possible. The new route is radically different from the old one so not really practical to use it as a template and reconstruct parts.

Also is there any way of removing squares from a route once they have been merged?

Only by saving the original route under a different name and then laboriously deleting the unwanted baseboard squares.

Again, only by deleting them one at a time. If they are not adjacent, be sure to keep saving frequently - using a different name each time to avoid problems.

How would I go about deleting individual squares? I'd thought about that but can't find a way of doing so.

I suppose a lesson in this (and perhaps a hint for other relative newbies) is to create elaborate stations (or other complex parts of layouts) on individual squares then merge them together in a route once they're complete.

In any case I've discovered that copying and pasting onto the same route doesn't copy the splines anyway

Ian,

To delete invidivual baseboards, go into the topology tool, where you add baseboards, and click on the delete baseboards. When you then click on a baseboard, it'll get ripped out.

The biggest thing to remember is there is no UNDO function when deleting baseboards, so it's important to backup Before doing this by saving under a new name.

And there's one other thing to consider too, sometimes when deleting baseboards in the older versions, the view may flip around and move to another baseboard. This can be very confusing and you end up deleting the wrong baseboard.

Now on to merging. This is done easily by choosing Merge Route from the file menu in Surveyor. In there a list of your installed routes will appear, and you can then choose the one you want to merge. After that you then move the route into position where you want it.

Some things to keep in mind when merging:

You can't change direction of the merged in route. (rotate it in any way).
There's no way of adjusting the height between your current route and the merged in one.

So keeping this in mind, if the route you want to merge is at a different height, you will need to build transition baseboards in between. I usually use between 3 and 8 baseboards to change height, and by the time I get done, there's no way of knowing there was a transition done because I blend the textures carefully and the height is done very subtly between the two routes. This same technique is needed to merge in routes that don't quite match up because the merged in route faces a different direction than your current one you want to merge with. You may need to build several 'tween' boards to bring the ends together.

Copy in stuff:

You are correct splines don't copy in TRS2004-TRS2006. In TRS2009 (I can't remember if this was '2009, may it was just in TS2010. I get brain farts now...) and above, the ability to copy splines was added in.

Station building:

This can take time, and there are many parts by various builders (creators). Andi06, one of the most awesome builders here, has created a station kit series with different platforms, splines, walls, etc. Other people have made benches, barrels, luggage, carts, etc. Placing the objects can be a pain because the earlier versions of trains below TS2010 do not have layers. (2009 might, but then I can't remember right now). Without the ability to lock stuff in place, the task can be a bit frustrating. I'm not saying it can't be done, but it can be a bit of a "trying" experience to add in objects on the platforms then adjust them because the station may be selected instead.

Anyway, I hope this helps. Feel free to post more questions.

John
