Copying content from one layout to another

I've found in this thread here
http://forums.auran.com/trainz/showthread.php?92057-Moving-%28copying%29-a-track-layout-is-that-possible
that it is possible to copy the track layout from one layout/map/route to another.
Is it possible to copy track objects & scenery objects/splines as well?
I've got a route and want to re-texture it from GoogleEarth aerial photographs and it seems as if the easiest way is to create a new route with TransDEM and then copy the tracks & objects across.

Edit

Ok, I've tried this. Opening both routes in CM3 and copying and pasting the files across works for all (as far as I can see on a quick test) types of objects. (I'm using TS10, build 44088)
The mapfile.trk has the track and object splines,
the mapfile.obs has the objects, both trackside (signals, etc.) and scenery,
the mapfile.gnd has the height and ground textures (this will be the one I need to transfer when I pluck up courage to do it for real!)
the mapfile.lyr presumably has info about layers,
but what is stored in mapfile.trc and mapfile.bmk?
Do I need these files as well?
Thanks
