Convertiing from MicroDEM to TransDEM?

Hi all,

In the past, I have used MicroDEM to create routes, but I've been thinking about buying TransDEM, as those who have it give it good reviews. My main reason for wanting to switch is so that I can use Google Earth/Bing Maps overlays to lay prototypical track & scenery.

My big concern with switching is learning to use a new program - I don't have hours and hours to learn a new technique. I have been using this tutorial to walk me through the steps when I want to create a route...I can't seem to remember the process fully when I got 6+ months between creating routes. But I can crank out a new DEM relatively quickly this way.

Is there a similar step-by-step walk-through guid for creating a route in Trainz with TransDEM?

I recently bought a new computer, so I don't have any of the old programs anymore...making it a good time to upgrade. To create a route, I use to have to have MicroDEM, IrfanView, HOG & Tigerlines all installed. Is TransDEM a one-stop shop? Will I still have to download DEM & Tiger/Line data from the GIS website as before, or does the TransDEM program have a way to find/load this info? I don't mind new technology, but I have to be able to use it! I have read through the capabilities of TransDEM on geophil's website, but didn't know if a good tutorial for newbies was lurking around for those who have the program. Thanks for the help/insight!

Hi Chase,

I have some quick and easy guides that will get you going. I do recommend reading the actual documentation for TransDEM as well. Combine the two and you'll be off and running quickly. Let me know if you're interested and I'll PM the link to you for my documentation.

Thanks John - If I do go with TransDEM, I'll certainly take you up on the offer!

There are step by step tutorials included with TransDEM that show how to use most if not all of its features. This includes making routes for Trainz. If you take the time to do these tutorials carefully, I bet you will spend more time finding and downloading DEMs than it takes to create a route and ground overlays using TransDEM.

TransDEM can be as addicting as Trainz! :D

TransDEM is a great buy for route creators. However it does have a steep learning curve; mostly due to cartography terminology. However, once you get the process down, you can create base routes in minutes.
Good luck.
