MKT Forever and always
I've been having a problem with CM2 over the past weekend. basically, if the download is large (i've yet to find the barrier, but 3-4mb seems to be the cutoff) the Download Helper will keep running until the download is just about to finish, then the speed will slowly wind down to 0.00bps, at which point, no matter what i do, it won't start back up again. even if i delete the asset i'm trying to download from the Download Helper and try to go on to the next one, nothing. I'm utterly stumped. It never did this before.

I don't know if this matters, but i just got the computer hooked up to high-speed internet after years of running it on Dial-Up (long story short i lived in an area that didn't have high-speed). Does anybody know what's going on? I'm completely out of my leauge on this one.

I started a reply message to you thinking this was a Trainz problem but, on second thoughts, it may well be because your PC is short on space for temporary files. Give this a try:

Start "Internet Explorer" go to 'Tools' menu then 'Imternet Options' and 'Browsing History' - Delete temporary files and folders etc.....

If that does not work then you could try a disc cleanup - depends on your OS version exactly how you get to this. Let us know how you get on.

hmm, seems to have worked really well...Download Helper is running at 9-26kb per second now, unheard of here in non-FCT land!!!

Another source of space-eating 'leftover' files is \Windows\Temp. Clean that out once a week or so also. You'd be amazed at all the crud left over by installs and the like.

wow, didn't know that, thanks! I don't get on that much (usually only on the weekends, otherwise school would suffer from me playing trainz all the time:D!) but i'll make a note to do that every so often.

If you don't like messing with Windows Explorer down in the innards of your Operating System folders, just open the Computer window and right-click on drive "C". In the menu that appears, choose "Properties". On the dialog box that appears, click the "Disk Cleanup" button. The \temp files (and a lot of other things, including the Browser files) will be cleared out (if you check the box for them).

okay, cleaned out /windows/temp, and my internet temp files, and it seemed to work okay...until i ran headlong into a 10Mb download in CincySouthernRwy's Sesquehanna (i think i spelled that right:confused:) layout's dependencies. true to form, the download continued to the very end, then, with the bar almost entirely across, the speed wound down to 0.00bps. i stopped the download, closed and re-opened CM2, went on my way.

what's interesting is i think i've found the ceiling for this. the same problem happened on a download 3+ Mb in size (3.-something) but it worked on a 2Mb download just a little while before. i thought i had this problem nailed, apparently not.

So, would it be my internet? I'm confused...again.

Okay. So what I would do now (and I do this myself as a matter of course) is to just go to the Download Station web page and choose FTP for downloading. Stash the file you want somewhere (desktop, Downloads, etc) and let it proceed. Once you get the CDP you can open CMP and choose File ->Import as CDP to get it.

I use Firefox, not IE, so all I can tell you is that FF has excellent downloading capabilities.

EDIT: Sudden thought. Do you have a FCT, or are you doing downloads at really slow rates (like 2 or 3K/sec)?

Bill

I'd wait then until you have one. Without it, the DLS is doing some pretty strange stuff right now. I bought one yearly for a number of years now and wouldn't be without it. 350K/sec trumps 3K/sec every time

Bill

.....So, would it be my internet? .....

Maybe, maybe not - some ISPs put limits on downloads but I doubt this is your problem

It could be that CM2 is not clearing up temporary files during a download (that is, it's only clearing then when the full download is finished or when CM2 closes). If you don't have much space allocated for Windows temporary files then CM2 could be filling this up. (check the allocated space in Internet Explorer "Tools" > "Internet Options" > Browsing History section > "Settings" button.

I usually clear out my Windows temp files once a day using IE.

just did that, but i'll stutter along until i get my FCT. can't really do much 'till christmas really...

well, i meant cleaning out my temp files, but i'll check that in a minute. be right back. gotta fire up the computer first.

EDIT: right now it's set at 50Mb. i would think that's enough, right?
