Considering buying Trainz 12: Question about hardware

Hi all

Although I've been interested in trains since a child, I got into trainsims recently, when I bought Railworks 3 on vacation. I've read about the differences between Railworks and Trainz, and I decided I want to buy Trainz, mainly because of the Eastern European routes/trains right from the box, plus the much bigger offer of free add-ons (I think RW add-ons are too expensive).

There is however 1 thing I'm worried about; I've read some things about Train requiring a faster computer to run smoothly. My hardware is kinda budget:

AMD Athlon II X2 260 (3,2Ghz dual core)
6GB RAM
GeForce GT440 1GB

My question is: Should I be able to run Trainz 12 with decent graphics (as in not having to run the game on the lowest graphic settings)?

Hi and welcome to Trainz,

I am running trainz on...
AMD Phenom II X2 550 (3.1ghz dual core)
2GB Ram
GeForce GTS250

I am only having problems on extremely tree heavy routes. I am not a hardware pro, but it looks like you got something similar or beter, so I assume you would not have more problems with TS12 then survivable.
Note: I do still run Windows XP though, so that probably claims less on my hardware then a more recent OS.

I am running new Install of T12 on a I5 Processor at 3.0 GHZ , GTX550TI Graphics Card , Windows 7, and 6 gigs ram. I get 45-60 FPS, and in very dense scenery with lots of buildings in city and industrial areas, maybe down to 30FPS for a brief period. I am really happy with the performance of TS12 on a not very expensive PC.

Thanks for the replies! At what kind of graphics settings do you guys run the game? Something like medium or high?

The size of the route and how many consists your running can affect what settings you use. If you start seeing stutters drop the draw distance first then slders 2,3+5 until your happy.

Thanks again for the replies everyone, I will give it a go then :)

Get it direct from n3v, either download or boxed. Not amazon, or you might end up with a steam version, do a search on here for non patchable versions.
By the way n3v are promoting the steam version at the moment, don't get it even though it's cheaper.

there is a saying all over the world if its cheap its probably more expensive because of hidden surprises. :'(
You will be in for quiet a lot just thinking saving a few box. Steam what i know from is very ugly and not up to date on anything related to trainz and isolates you from anything normal when buying directly from N3V.
If you buy a 'cheap' graphics card probably if you would spent a little bit more time finding a lets call it a little bit more "expensive" one closer to GTX580 every penny spent is worth it even if you have a small budget try to wait or find ways to get that better one after talking to real trainzers with experience.
the money spent on Steam you could have put extra on your next GTXxxx card and than you can run your routes full sliders trust me.My config you can find on my thread incl experience and comments to prove it from other trainzer incl dear dutch fellow oknotsen. by the way dense area that make trainz stutter is not always the dense area causing it but the way the route was designed by the originator and most cases there is the lets call it flaw. Probably i have planted most treez in a trainz route ever and still have excellent frame routes for a yes extremely large and dense route.
To end with there is another glorious saying if you try to carry truckloads normally meant to be transported with trucks designed for it do not be in for a surprise or complain if the pickup you bought get stuck or not even 1 mile like in real life you see here in Thailand every day every time the most funny loads towering and pickups dragging the chassis hitting the asphalt with sparks flying around and saving one trip or truck :hehe: funny these guys each time ning and I say look at that one over there you won't believe it.
Hope this helps you too.

Roy;)

The build number of my game is 47103

The reason I bought it off Steam was not to save money (actually, if I bought it from N3V it would be the same price in Euro's. Never had bad experiences with Steam before (except one time buying a game that didn't work on Windows 7, but that was my own fault).

Unfortunately, Steam has a no-refund policy... however; if you look at Trainz 12 on Steam, it mentions multiplayer in the game features, wich it hasn't. So I think I'll give it a shot. Don't think it will work though...

That is the Steam version, but all is not lost.

Kris Deagle recently stated in another forum post that a patch will be made 'soon' - keep an eye out for updates.

morning Paulski,
it went very quiet last night after you'd bought it.
Make the best of it and have fun.
