An english royal family descended on one side from germans and on the other side from greeks.

The english may be stupid enough to see them as having any relevance to their lives.

They have no relevance to mine or a good proportion of the population of Wales.

IKB.

I guess that had they been of Spanish descent that would be OK then.

The earliest inhabitants of Wales originated from the Basque and Galician areas of the Iberian peninsula. Contrary to popular belief, they did not originate from Swindon Works.

You could well be related to Alberte (zatovisualworks)! Yaki dah.:p

Back on topic.

Good luck to the both William and Catherine.

I hadn’t planned to watch the day’s events for very long, but must admit to getting caught up in the transmission for the best part of five hours.

Bear in mind that the Royal Family attracts considerable income to the UK. Celebrating British pageantry with all of its pomp (decreasing) and ceremony is probably worth continuing for that alone. We have very few other industries these days.

What was seen today is a piece of history. Long may it continue.

The pain and misery in the rest of the World will still be there for the detractors to continue to enjoy tomorrow.

Cheers
Casper

@stovepipe, I wasn't having a go at you but some people forget to make a definition between the people and the state. I would like to think IKB did so in this case. I certainly know the difference.

In the interest of being subjective, it's just unfortunate that the royal family is such an emotive subject within the British Isles as a whole. It takes a moderately good understanding of British (and by that, I mean the British Isles) history to understand why almost any thread that mentions the royal family is going to descend into political argument regardless of intent.

I would suggest to the mods that any future thread that has mention of British royalty should be banned under the CoC terms.

There's indifference and even hate for the Royal Family throughout the British Isles, including the English. There's also a lot of people throughout the British isles who like the Royals, some of whom are Welsh, Scottish, Irish and English, even some people from Cornwall.

I err on the indifferent side but I wouldn't mind a small slice of their privileged lifestyle!

Goodness, I never would have known all the unsettled disagreements between the English, Welsh, and Scottish! I'll keep in mind to hold my tongue for the risk of offending someone if I ever get the chance to visit the UK.

I wish the happy couple well, but it's high time this thread be locked.

Hi Again Everybody.
I am one who believes that there is much in British history that this nation can have a little or no pride in. However, very many nations have events in their history of which to feel ashamed.

America's treatment of its native population (the Indians) leaves much to be desired along with the French invasion of Russia (under Napoleon) and most of all the German treatment of well-known groups and especially the Russians in the middle of the last century.

The above are just a small example of what nationalism and nations are capable of. I strongly believe that no one can point fingers at others without looking inside their own past.

However, that was not what today was all about. Today was about the future portrayed through a royal family which is not involved in politics and has not been for a substantial period of time. The wedding was about the future of that family and new blood being brought into it by the introduction of a commoner who hopefully will have new ideas as to the survival and future of royalty in Britain.

To those who decry royalty in Britain, I would ask what would you have in its place. President Camoron, president Blair, president Thatcher. Whoever or whatever you put in its place you still have to have a head of state. If you look at the presidents of many well-known countries such as France, Italy and even America at the present time they seem to be struggling much more than the royalty in Britain.

Involved in politics and therefore tainted with it inevitably brings unpopularity and even greater divisions than we have here in Britain over whether royalty should continue after the death of the present Queen.

I also believe what is being confused in the thread postings is whether or not England, Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland should continue as one nation. That is a matter which can be decided by the ballot box, and perhaps the first stages of that may be settled in this week's elections. I for one will be the first to congratulate and wish well on any of the above populations who decided to go their own way and I also believe that is the general feeling in England.

Today's wedding was not about all the above, it was about spectacle, pageantry, unreality and to take us out of our everyday life. As stated in an earlier posting if members of the forum think it was over the top by the worldwide television companies then all I can say is those companies must have done their market research which also must have shown that the biggest audience and therefore advertising would be produced by showing the wedding.

There is no need to close the thread if all forum members keep their postings respectful and in the above context.

Bill
NB:- I have just been down and watched Abby service and procession back to the palace again. Absolutely brilliant. I've really enjoyed today

Perhaps some people would do well to remember also that an event like this has brought in tourists (you know, the type who bring in billions into the British economy!). Britain wouldn't be nearly as attractive as a destination if it wasn't for the Royal Family and the heritage behind it.

Perhaps people ought to enjoy life instead of moaning about every little thing.

500 million according to the Beeb. If it was billions, there would be no financial crisis.

In this one wedding, the royal family have doubled the annual cost to the British taxpayer. Okay, so it's only 67 odd pence but as a republican, it's still 60 million I'd rather see spent on something worthwhile.

The sad thing about this whole RFW rubbish is that only 35% of the population of the British Isles actually care about the RFW.

pfx, how much did the investiture of the present American president cost. All heads of state cost money and I believe that the British royalty give far more color and spectacle than the gray overcoat events that all presidential systems provide.

Also as a regular visitor to London for meetings etc you realize it is not all about one event. Whatever time of year you go to London you will always see Russians, Americans, Japanese and these days even Chinese outside the palace, Abbey, Tower of London and the other royal palaces and premises associated with it. They are their because they can see " living history" in British royalty.

At night you can see them on the strand, Covent Garden and the Kingsway spending their money right throughout the year. Money which tax is paid on even when no great event is taking place.

All Governments and presidents cost money to keep. I would suggest that taken on a yearly basis the present Queen probably produces a return on the money spent and with much more color and dignity than any presidential system.

First off, I'm not going to even try to interject myself into a political debate of politics in the British Isles as I'm sure it wouldn't be appreciated just as much as I abhor anyone not from the U.S. trying to interject themselves into American political debate. So, I'm not going there.

I would however like to congratulate HRH William and Kate on their nuptuals. He couldn't pick his parents and family any better than the rest of us. He and Kate deserve to be wished well as much as any newlywed couple and I so do. The history of the Royal family is checkered (as I'm sure most of our own ancestry lines are); however, it is one of the longest lasting lines of lineage in the world and Great Britain should be proud of the rich heritage that the Royals bring to their great country. No matter what the news of the day is, it will still be there tomorrow, but weddings such as this happen so very seldom, that it is a pleasant distraction from the drudgeries of life.

One last word. One never knows what you've got until it's gone and then you'll miss it terribly.

Best of luck to Will and Kate
Mike

PS: By the way pfx, I think Dean was speaking of tourism in general to the British Isles due to the Royals and this type of thing, not specifically this particular wedding. That's the way that I read it anyway.

As a break from Traiz I watched the wedding and enjoyed the service. Indeed had the bunting out to brighten a dreich (as we say up here in Scotia) day. As for banning the Monarchy here -eh? It is a fact of life and part of the system! It might not please 20-25% of the population but this IS a Monarchy so tnhat borders on the ludicrous. It is all very well saying that there were human rights disagreements here in the 90's but have we looked at the history of other democracies including the USA? With torture going on in an army camp in Cuba wher they have no right to maintain a base in a sovereign nation and arranging torture all round the world via rendition pfx open your eyes wider (!).

IKB may well be a fervent Welsh nationalist as is his entitlement but borders on a rather over the top sentiment. Wales like us up here in Scotland are financially here thanks to the UK Exchequer. And I do recall when the Welsh first voted in a referendum for having an Assembly they only got it by what was it - 1%?! Does that make half the Welsh people stupid to IKB? Shows he is not on such high moral ground?

The Royals may have mixed ancestry but he omits Scots in that one. Rather selective stuff there? Should America not have Obama then because he is mixed race including overseas? Maybe much of the coverage went over the top but when someone here mentions much of the moaning is coming on the thread from outside GB I would also remind that 2 billion were on tv and many of those on the Mall were Americans amongst others. When you look at the world the worst offenders about dictatorships tends to be republics and we have had a wee group of them ensuring the Presidential system had a right of succession from one family!

It brightened things up in a difficult clime and I don't see anything that bad when it brought so many people together from differing background. I listende to people of different colours, from republics, from Australia to a party from Dublin and so on.I won't let the dismal-jimmies throw rain on my parade! Now back to my Trainz build and bring the bunting in......!

As I stated in another thread royalty=politics.

This and other threads mentioning royalty should be closed and deleted.

I am a nationalist and a republican.

We are never going to get an overwhelming vote for any sort of devolution in Wales. Due to the large amount of english incomers who live here, who vote against it and vote tory. Plus the huge apathy towards politicians, which leads people to not bother voting at all. A problem that applies to the whole UK.

The same reason for Wales not having a hope in hell of voting for independence.

I don't know where rjhowie gets his royal family descended from scots from. Their family name up untill 1917 was "Saxe-Coburg-Gotha", it was changed to "Windsor" during WW1 due to anti-german sentiment.

IKB.

As the thread is still with us:-

have we looked at the history of other democracies including the USA? With torture going on in an army camp in Cuba wher they have no right to maintain a base in a sovereign nation and arranging torture all round the world

I listende to people of different colours, from republics, from Australia to a party from Dublin and so on.quote]

As an Irish Republican , I would say that no royalist could ever condemn any other nation for torture, or imprisoning of anyone.

As to any party from Dublin celebrating a royal wedding or birth, I would say that they are traitors to their own country and should go.

If you really wish to know what the majority of Irish think of the royals try and get the words that we sing when the english anthem is played. ( I would be barred for life if I printed them here.)

After that rant I say get the B******* off this forum.

~~~~snip~~~~but have we looked at the history of other democracies including the USA?
~~~~snip~~~~

...!

The United States of America is NOT a democracy.

It was formed as a ....Constitutional Republic.

Our Pledge of Allegiance uses the words.... "and to the Republic for which is stands"
