Commencement

Congratulations to you! Now you (traditionally) take the summer off and then plunge yourself into finding a job. However with today's economy you may want to start searching now. Remember to look for a job with potential, don't judge it on the merits of it's current state, even busboys can become restaurant managers after some hard work and maybe additional schooling. If you're on to college next, then it's a different story, but I still recommend getting a job for the summer. College will go better with a part time job, but since you don't know your schedule until you are there, that's hard to arrange beforehand.
I can't stress enough that a job you take now is not a "prison sentence" that you'll serve for the rest of your life. Remember that people retire, they move, they get promoted, they get sick and die, and life is largely a game of chance. You will meet people, you will be promoted, you will get other opportunities if your work shows that you are worthy.

I graduated today.
Congratulations Kris!
Time to go out and party till you cant feel your legs anymore (I was going to say "and get drunk", but I understand you aint allowed that yet).

and then plunge yourself into finding a job.
Or just study and party; you can work the rest of your life if you want to, so dont bother with that untill you have to :p.

Whoah awesome!
That's fantastic news Kris! Well done to you!
As an "oldie" I am a multi ticketed tradesman.
Can I say to you, that any job is a good job in todays climate.
The trick is to get any job and (maybe you're not gonna like this) keep on studying
and gaining as many certificates and qualifications as you can.
Personal advancement never ends but its great fun when all is said and done.
Congrats mate!!!!! Go get em~!

Ps: I have 3 units of study to complete until I can teach at colleges.

G'day,

Congratulations, with the tedium of studies out of the way, you can now dedicate the rest of your life to TrainZ.

Have a good one.

Or you could seriously consider your future and start to think about further education. There will be plenty of time for parties and Trainz when you land that 50K a year job with all the qualifications you earn between now and then.

Well I'm looking at working for BART as an operator considering I live roughly 90 miles from Oakland where the headquarters are and I have a ton of family living there?

Unless you can get yourself an education in management or engineering your probably going to have to test to get a position on public payroll. Of course, if you can can claim Arnold Shwartzenager or Bruce Willis as a relative, you may have a chance at a better position. However, I have read some of your posts and you certainly appear to have the intelligence and go to make something of it. I got stuck driving ships about the planet; I think your goal is better; I always wanted to drive trains about the neighborhood.
Perhaps someone in your family, familiar with BART can guide you towards your goal.

I hate janitor jobs. Besides you should see all the protesters in front the California State Building fighting for health care for themselves and their families.

My guess Kris is that you would be better to consider going to College. It will open so many more opportunities. Congratulations and good luck. :)

Cheers

AJ

That's what I'm considering but until then I'm just gonna have to find a part time job somewhere to enhance my credibility.

Well If American movies have tought me anything it's that collage is the way to go haha. In 6 six weeks I will finish school to. Not sure whether I'll take up an apprenticeship being a heavy diesel fitter in the mines or go to uni , I've even looked at coming to the states as a sponsored summer camp trainer thingo while i make up my mind and to see a bit more of the world. Either way it sounds fun. Part time jobs are always good in the mean time even if it means working at some sucky supermarket stacking shelves like me, still, money is money. I understand jobs are pretty difficult to come by over there thou so things might be tougher for you.

Start looking for a place in a local education facility now, then you'll have the summer to yourself knowing your future is taken care of.
You don't want to spend the rest of your life asking people "you want fries with that".

I wouldn't advise anyone to go to college, especially right now, especially right after high school. College in the the US, and I suspect elsewhere has grown to be a complete scam, too expensive, too useless unless you're working towards a doctorate or at least a Masters degree. In the US, and I suspect elsewhere there are SO MANY degree holders that have job experience that have been let go from their jobs, and they will be competing with you for that position. Business needs workers now that are willing to get their hands dirty...everyone thinks they're going to get a BS degree and end up sitting in an office noodling on the computer all day. Many companies look for people with BA degrees because they have a well rounded education, without focusing on any one discipline too narrowly. I'm not knocking college, but you have to weigh the investment of thousands of dollars that have to paid back (if you take a student loan) against what type of job you will actually be able to get once you graduate (if you graduate). Kris, I don't know anything about you, but from what I've read from you here; you just don't seem the college type...right now. You could head to the oil fields in the Dakotas and bring in a good chunk of money, work hard and get the experience of the job, and of life, before you decide on your future. I've been working in my field for 30 years, and those young guys living in the "man camps" are making twenty grand more a year than I am now! Certain fields are looking to replace old retiring workers right now, and they are in dire straits because no one wants to get their hands dirty anymore. Machinists, tool and die workers are only two of such fields. They will pay you to work and to go to trade school to learn the craft. You don't think you would have a good chance with a railroad with those qualifications? Read the first post I put on this thread, you aren't signing on to anything for the rest of your life...stuff happens, you'll be surprised where life takes you. I've been through schools and changed my goals many times, and many times it just comes down to dumb luck. I always thought I would end up being a pharmacist, but I cycled through Law Enforcement and then ended up in construction, and I'm very happy. I'm not loaded, but I make a good salary, and my job is not that strenuous.

I've had so many opportunities, I took some and deferred others. The same will happen to you.

I hope you will consider what I've said. If I was just out of high school and I was offered a janitor's job with a railroad, I would take it. I would work hard and keep moving up until I was CEO, but if you're going to turn your nose up at an entry level job because you "don't like this or don't like that", you're going to find out that no one will want to hire you. You would be surprised how many recent college grads would kill to get a janitor's job...anywhere. In addition to that, there's plenty of older workers who haven't had a job for two years and their unemployment is running out and their house is in foreclosure and they can't put food on the table for the kids and their wife is contemplating divorce, and THEY would slit your throat for a janitor's position, with health care benefits and maybe a 401K and a week of vacation a year.

Think about it please, this isn't the 1950's anymore, and damn few fairy tales turn out to be true.

Edit: Oh yeah, one more thing: meet girls, fall in love, have fun, but DO NOT, do not get married!;)
