At a guess, I'd say it was an SP GS-4 4-8-4 steam loco in SP's Daylight Colours on the point of a passenger train heading towards San Francisco on the south side of the Shasta Mountains in California.

Mystry Train

For this mystry train and by the shape of.
I will have to go a GS-4 (Southern Pacific Daylight) with the shape of the front the diangle step and a rounded shape on the front.( i believe it was said by the Southern Pacific that we need to bring passengers back to our trainz.)
and no offence, but elephant ears would be shown as a square, around the step well.

'40's loco, and I'm pretty sure it isn't streamlined or cheap, and not really glamourous

OVERKILL: IMHO - Yes, scenery and route builder are shocking and I don't think the graphics are great - Don't reply to this

They say "cost effective...passenger equipment"? hmm....I'm thinking the cattle car ;)

No really, since I don't think anyone else has guessed it, I'm going to say the PRR Steam Turbine

Stab in the dark

As an Aussie I dont have that much knowledge about US railroad history but if this is a simple guessing game I will have a shot and say The Santa Fe " Super Chief " Kind of fits

Cheers

"If railroad passenger services were to survive, operators realized they would need to change their thinking and find a more cost effective approach."

"Manufacturers of railroad equipment were also taking note of the changing age and sought to provide solutions for their valuable customers."

It's not steam. Pre 1950's electrics and diesels proved to be far more economical than steam.

Electric or diesel? I would say these are your choices and of these, wishful thinking makes me choose diesel.
Alco PA1, EMD E and F series would be my guess. As far as a road or specific train, I need more information, BUT from a marketing stand point I will guess "East Coast".

i agree with you jkinzel.

and even though i posted for people to stop posting steam train answers, they still keep posting. ??? read the thread first. dont read the OP and reply

The facts certainly fit the Aerotrain but it was an oddball looking train. Having said that the styling is growing on me but I would prefer it to be the Silver Lady.

Autotrain

"Automobiles were fast becoming an affordable option for the modern traveller, and flight was also steadily gaining in popularity. If railroad passenger services were to survive, operators realised they would need to change their thinking and find a more cost effective approach."

This certainly hints at the Autotrain to me. The dates fit, it's not steam and it "provides solutions to it's valuable customers".

The same idea of moving road transport by rail has saved the US industry with piggy-back being a life-saver for US road's freight revenues.

Not that I'd know, being a Kiwi !

Just a silly idear !

Being from Australia not not completely into USA Trains ....

I think this was the period that the gas turbines were tested, could it be one of those?
