By the 1950's, passenger revenues on America's railroads had long since passed their heyday. Automobiles were fast becoming an affordable option for the modern traveller, and flight was also steadily gaining in popularity.
If railroad passenger services were to survive, operators realised they would need to change their thinking and find a more cost effective approach.
Manufacturers of railroad equipment were also taking note of the changing age and sought to provide solutions for their valuable customers. How would rail travel survive in the future and what shape would tomorrow's trains take?

My friend, the sillouhette has nothing to do with it. The sillouhette is of the TS12 N&W Y6b. It's just the TS12 cover and launcher image. It has nothing to do with the mystery train if you ask me.you guys are looking at the sillouhette, right?
i see a pilot beam, boiler, maybe even elephant ears...its some kind of steam engine. being US, that rules out some of the more intersting types (Franco-Crosti, Electro-steam, Beyer-Garratm, etc) I'm thinking either the Pennsy S1 6-8-6, the skyline-capped 4-6-4-4 (or whatever it was) of the same road, maybe the NYC S-1 4-8-4, the Jawn Henry, or that big Chessie turbine built for the George Washington.
actually, now that i think about it, it might be the "Yellow Belly" 4-6-4. As for the train, i ain't got no idea...

Empire Service
Possibly with a Turboliner engine.

There's hardly enough information to make a guess. Like any business the changes to rail passenger volume was anticipated years before 1950. I'll take a stab, pinning my guess on the only significant change around that time and say The California Zephyr? The use of dome cars was the only factor I can identify that the railroads used to try to stem the loss of passengers.
Amtrak was formed in 1971
