I'm sticking by my first chose which is the high-level El Capitan, which was started in the mid 50's and was economic in that it did not require as many coaches as previously needed for the slightly earlier El Capitan

I think it looked best with the FP45's at the lead in the years before Amtrak.

Nothing really of note, Electrification in the key places in the US occurred quite a bit earlier, 1910s for the Milwaukee Road, iirc...

And 1930s for the portions of the east coast that would become the NEC.

The 1950s were relatively quiet in terms of new (electric) locomotives - the electric locomotives introduced in the late 30s for the east coast electrified projects (NYC, PRR, etc) all managed to stay competitive until the 1960s (or in the case of the GG1, until the 1980s from being built in the 1930s).

I don't think electric can be an answer here if it's 1950s America, it was the decade of diesel for sure.

Not exactly, the PRR/Penn Central/FTA Metroliner project was starting up in the mid 1960s. It pretty much paved the way for the Acela and was the impetus behind much of the NEC improvement. There's also the articulated Keystone trainset the PRR built in 1955, but I think that's too obscure to warrant a payware model.

Whilst I agree that the 'photo is from the cover of TS12, My imagination leads to
UP's " Portland Rose" headed, as it often was by a two tone Grey 4-6-6-4 " Challenger" with smoke deflectors , the loco looks like a Mallet as it heels into the curve . A man can Dream

in the 1950's the idea of steam was slowly dieing but was still visible in most railroads. if it continued we would see larger steam locomotives like the challenger and the big boy. the only guess i can think of that would possibly be steam would be the proto type 4-3-3-4. with the streamlined body made to pull the long heavy passenger cars. but if it is deasil then it would have to be the centapede or one of the PRR electric rebuilt GG1's made to look like diesel electrics that are currently still in survice from 1959

Eureka! I think we have it. It's a nuclear powered 4-3-3-4 that looks exactly like a Y6b.

there is no such thing as a 4-3-3-4, there is such a thing as a 4-6-6-4, a 4-4-4-4, and a 4-8-8-4, but a locomotive can not have an uneven wheel arrangement
