i saw a good tutorial the other day on how to clone an asset and convert it to a graphic image for editing in gmax, but i forget where i saw it. anyone know where i can find a good tutorial for that?
thank you

If you are contemplating some method of modifying the .IM files then I think you will be very unlucky. If this is what you intend and you do find some program that allows this, then discussion of it is against the rules of this forum as set out in the COC, and using it would be a direct attack on the copyright of the original creator.

If you are just looking to change the colours, Gmax is not required and you will find plenty of information about this. Just reword your post to make it clear what your intention is.

i just want to take a loco that can be repainted, clone it, keep the original loco, and repaint and re-letter the new loco. i want to paint some locos like my local short line. from what i read, i thought gmax was needed for that.

No, you don't need Gmax for that. Gmax is used to build the model and to map textures to it. What you're looking to do is what we call 'reskinning' and there are lots of threads around about reskinning and I believe there's some tutorials around on the subject. Basically, what you'll need is a photoediting program to edit the textures that are applied to the model. These texture files will generally have either a .tga, .bmp or .jpg extension. I use photoshop for textures, but there's lots of programs out there. I believe that a lot of folks use GIMP, which I believe is a free program/download.

You can clone the object that you're wanting to reskin in CM and then go to work on the cloned object to reskin it. Word of warning though, in most instances, you will need the permission of the original creator to upload or redistribute a reskinned object.
