Can't get sound from both speakers

Steel on Steel
Probably like some other members here, I have a 2.1 speaker system. Two wired speakers and my sub off to my right. This problem is the same even if I use a headset. You know how you have a train moving on your right side? Your right ear picks up more than your left. You would expect a simulator to do the same.... I notice that when I have a train moving on the right, my right speaker will pick up ALL the sound, and leave the left speaker with nothing. The really annoying part is when the left speaker will cut in and out with sounds. It sound as if a train is passing by on the left side as well, but only intermittently. Anyone know what I'm experiencing?

Thanks guys!

I really don't think there's a solution for this, but I hope it does get fixed.

Shane,

Honestly, I don't really know how to check, but I would assume it's stereo. Is there a way to check this?

I've had this problem.

Prime suspect here is a poor cable connection. The control panel settings wouldn’t normally cause intermittent sound output, but it would be helpful to know your operating system as Shane has requested.

A crushed cable or faulty plug/socket can produce the problem you describe. So can a poor connection, even with a healthy cable.

It might be worth checking your hard wiring for damage. Trace back along the wire from each speaker to the output socket looking for any kinks or parts of the cable which may have been crushed of bent back too far at the connection points enough to damage the internal wire or screening inside the cable sheath.

Make sure the plugs are fully pushed into the back of the computer (and pushed into the speakers if they are not the permanently moulded in type). On my system, simply taking out the plugs and pushing them back in was enough to restore a good connection and solved the problem.

The imported jacks in the equipment are the likely culprit. They either corrode or loose their tension. I have a set of Altec speakers and it took several years but one speaker is now silent unless I really fiddle with the plug. The jacks, in my speakers, are mounted on a printed circuit board and not easily replaced. When I get the ambition I will have to search the catalogs for some.

Thanks guys. I'm running Win7 x64. I'll go and check the cables and speakers, see how everything is. Also, I just updated my audio drivers, so we'll see how that helps.

I'll report back.

Andy

Edit: Okay, things seem to be good now, since the audio update, the sound if nice an even.
