can you run trainz 04 and 06 on the same machine
i have o6 running allready and just got 04 would it be smart to install

Yes you can - with the amount of harddrive space required and several other problems associated with running the two systems I personally cannot see the point in installing an earlier version when the later is (my opinion) better in "most" respects.
There are always some members opinions which will differ from the above comment but then that is why Trainz is so interesting.
Initially I had - like many others - problems with the 2006 version but having persevered am now happy with the paxkage.
Summing up - Yes but why would you !!

i just have so many problems with 06 and i have more then enogh compter
i would pay $100 or $150 for a game thats playable. everytime i build a route some kind of something goes wrong maybe i try to make it to detaled i dont know

(and sorry to all i cant spell)

I have never had a problem with trains 2006 either. And I have used trains 2004 and 2006 and have built routes in both. I have a lot of complex routes that were built in trains 2006 and never had a problem.

I could not agree more - I have said before and this is not meant in any derogatory way "most problems are self-inflicted".
Check information in the instruction manual and in particular this forum and work within the limits of both the program and the PC used.
I have also used 2004 and now 2006 and apart from my own teething troubles have built some very detailed routes and by using Fraps to test have regulated scenery etc to an accepted level.
This is my fourth year with Trainz and I hope to continue for many more - I am still learning and I don't think with a program of this size one can ever know everything - but it sure is good trying !!

everytime i add alot of roads and splines it almost freezes up
and if i try to save it crashs to windows i hate to reinstall ive got over a year of downloads 6400 different piece of content im almost stuck in a rock and a hard place what do u guy think the problem is
i have a amd 64 3500t with 2 gb of ram and a nivida gfroce 8500gt card it plays way better games then trainz i mean more detailed

I have UTC, TRS2004, TRS2006, Trainz Classics and Trainz Driver all installed on the same PC.

Only the Original CE Trainz can't go on as it uses the same registry entry as UTC.

Back to the original post - have you installed the Service Pack and even more important "according to the install instructions" - without more detail on exactly your situation it is difficult to give advice in case it is of more hindrance than help.
Reading your last post it certainly seems - with the specs of your PC - to be either an install problem or incorrect use of the software.

i dont have the service packs installed i tought that was for the games outside of the us i dont know what version i have i know its trainz 06 i cant find the version on the box

Hi,

You will not find the version on the box, you need to launch TRS2006, at the main menu, look at the bottom right corner of the screen, you will see the version number listed, write it down for reference then download the service pack that matches.

I run 04 and 06 on the same machine, no problems. I build routes in 04 (cause I can find stuff easier) but run them in 06 (cause it looks and runs better).

Definitely install SP1 on 06 for best results.

Andy :)

Andy,

That's a great idea. When my route is finshed in 04, I will install and run the route in 06.

What kind of fps increase do you see when you run your 04 route in 06?

How does the route look better in 06?

Two very good questions. Let's see if there are 2 believable answers...

ROFL :)

At the risk of wandering Off Topic....

Q1: fps identical.

Q2: Difficult to quantify but:

- 04 looks better on my system with DirectX. 06 OTOH looks better in Open GL. By 'better' I mean for the same Anti Aliasing and Anisotropic filter settings 06 looks sharper and clearer.

- Screenies from 06/OG generally don't need sharpening. Screenies from 04/DX invariably need sharpening.

- I like loco lights 'on'.

Believable? Don't know, but what IS believable is that IMHO the subjectively perceived improvements in the 'look' of 06 are worth the hassle of copying route folders from 04 to the desktop and importing/committing to 06 before running new sections of a wip route....

Andy :)

I have a scenario in 2004, called NG1300e, that I've imported into 2006.
It's a layout, especially at the start, that's really hard on my frame rate.
In 2004 my frame rate, at the beginning is 22 to 23. In 2006 the frame rate, same scene, is 30 to 32. Another scenario I have, Life on the Sandy River, has a starting frame rate of 42 on 2004, and a frame rate of 52 in 2006.
I've just downloaded Razorback Dual into both. In Surveyor, in 2004, the frame rate is 16. In 2006, same spot, the frame rate is 25.
I can'r say one is sharper than the other. but I also have TC and that seems sharper than 2004 and 2006
