Can you convert a 2004 route to 2010?

Is it possible to convert a route created in 2004 to work mostly well in 2010 compatibility mode? I know it'll work as is but it really runs like mashed potatos.

I'm reffering to BillM's Pennsylvania&Berwind route. He used a lot of forest spline which I think is really causing my problems.

Here are some of my problems. The route runs well enough in driver mode with of course a lot of alpha channel problems bc of the forest splines. The real problems are in surveyor. I'm slowly weeding out the 2004 trees and replacing them with speed trees and JVC 3D trees and I am replacing the roads with yarn roads. I am also replacing non working crossing gates. The problem is when I'm working on track, it'll randomly disappear and only reappear if I leave the baseboard where the problem is. As I continue to work through this it'll get worse to the point where only textures and land forms will show up and it won't be localized anymore. When this happens I have to save and restart trainz. There is also some pretty rediculous draw distance problems. It'll only draw one baseboard or so at a time. Would deleting the forest splines do the trick?

Is there any hope of fixing this? I really like operating this route but just want it to work a little better. I'm fine with compatibility mode as well.

Hi: I like to use individual Trees on my route because of the same problem your having..I aways thought that splines will effect your frame rate more..

Draw Distance

I am not sure about this, but maybe and because the route was made in 2004 which has a limited Draw Distance, that is the reason your Draw Distance is giving problems.
I use 04 and am lucky if it will allow me to see across one board, let alone three, as these later version of Trainz allow.

So that what I'm wondering. Is the fact that this route was created in 04 inherently going to cause problems? Is there anything that can be done to the config file to fix this?

-Joe

There is no problem with the route itself, TRS04 routes run fine in TRS10 Compatibility Mode. Your problem lies with the content used on the route. Some older content is going to give you problems. If an older route uses a lot of 'problem' content then it is not going to run well in 10. There is nothing you can do to the route config. There are lots of threads about steps you can take to improve the performance of older content in later versions of Trainz...

Thanks Andy. I had a feeling it had to do with the older content. That's why I'm slowly replacing that content. I suppose I will continue to replace the old content with better working content. Hopfully that'll resolve my problems.

I guess the main thing is getting rid of those tree splines. Are there any good JVC forest splines that work in '10?

Judging by RBR's experiences you might find that the track gets totally screwed up in places. Not being a layout creator I can't say why that happens.

I suggest changing out the track to one that is TS2009 and or TS2010 compatible. There are some really nice ones available.

The reason for the disappearing track has something to do with the way the LOD has been changed as well as the Alpha channel difference. Track isn't the only item that will do that. I've seen it with fences, powerlines, and roads.

I agree with the spline tree issue. I too did the same thing because I felt there was both a rendering problem even in TRS2004, and the performance issues.

Good thread.

I have found that 2004 layouts from the US, AU, etc convert just fine. BUT layouts made elsewhere is a hit and miss proposition (evidently with a different version of Trainz). I like the route so I run them as is.
