Can two copies of Trainz run on the same computer?

Chris, Thanks again. You have been very helpful.

mjolnir, the "thumb" drive sounds like a good idea. Most people have one these days.

Your comment about locos and rolling stock has been taken on board. The problem is getting others to run and evaluate the route. They would then have to download that stuff would they not? I was thinking of people having to download and test 'several routes' and as suggested, ease of installing will probably be part of the evaluation process.

It's early days yet. This is Woody's baby and he's probably in shock right now!

I like to place my cards on the table. If I were creating the rules, I'd put them up for evaluation and hopeful consensus first. Rules can make or break a competition like this.

What exactly is proposed to be judged in the contest? Landscape elements, texturing, and scenery objects? Landscape elements, texturing, and scenery objects and trains? Landscape elements, texturing, and scenery objects, trains and driver rules? It might be easier to exclude railroad cars and locomotives from the list of items to be judged, that is, the submission would be a route, not a session. [There's another contest: given a specific route containing only built-in content, design a session.]

My interest is in simulating contemporary North American railroading, so any route I build is most likely to require freight cars not included in the game since there are no built in contemporary refrigerator cars, higher capacity (50 foot, 60 or 86 foot) high-cube box cars, or modern tank cars. And if ones' submission happens to a shortline, what does one do for a locomotive, since in-game content includes only mainline existing railroads?

I know 2006 and 2009 can, because I'm already doing it. But what about two copies of 2006, or TC, or 2009?

"Why? you ask.

Based on an idea formulated by Illinoiscentral (Woody), in another thread I suggested we hold a Route Building Competition next year where people would create a small route using out-of-the-box assets in the Trainz version of their choice. When discussing this with PEV today, he said that may be difficult because many modellers would have added stuff to their asset collection, making it impossible to know what was out-of-the-box, and what was not!

If anyone was interested in this competition, it would be great if they could install a second copy of Trainz to ensure they were only using out-of-the-box assets.

Hope that makes sense.

I am also running three installs of 2006 (same build#). One on my "C" drive and two on drive "E", a 250GB Toshiba USB drive. There is no conflict whatsoever. As meatloaf noted, the only problem if you want to call it a problem is keeping downloads from the DLS straight.

tomurban, thanks. All very comforting.

mjolnir, Answering as best I can:

Snippet: What exactly is proposed to be judged in the contest?

It depends on which one you're referring to. Illinoiscentral (Woody) started one in May. It's due to be finished in late November I think. There were set guidelines for that one and judging will be done from screenshots. I have nothing to do with that competition in any way or form. Link: http://forums.auran.com/trainz/showthread.php?t=41606

He has set the ball rolling and he may, or may not run another competition next year. How that competition will proceed is in Woody's court, however I did make some suggestions and offer to help him. To prove my suggestions were workable I started this thread. It seems the answer is yes, but if Woody decides not to use any part of my suggestions, that's fine by me.

As such, your questions are probably an little premature, but interesting none the less. I feel a little embarrassed in some respects, because I hadn't spoken to Woody when I opened this thread. In other respects, it does show that some people would be interested in another competition next year and it will be interesting if Woody takes up the challenge. From what know, he's a student at a crucial point of his studies and he may not have the time or desire to continue next year. If he does, I've offered my support and that's about as far as it's reached.

Finally, all competitions have rules that try to place everyone on a level playing field. If the rules for an art competition say the painting must be a landscape painted in watercolours and no larger than 2 feet x 2 feet, them's the rules. You either enter the competition or you don't. Not all competitions suit all people, so it's really the luck of the draw. My suggestion was an out-of-the-box competition where anyone could enter. If I had my way (which I don't), I'd make it two baseboards max so that people like you who do bigger and better things with Trainz wouldn't have to waste too much time creating an entry. On the other hand, the competition could be aimed at the artisans and skilled content creators amongst you to create the most challenging layout of all time. That way, you could submit a route you built five years ago. That is pretty much like the competition Woody is running now, except he has limited the size of the route to a fixed number of baseboards in a certain pattern.

I have to conclude by saying that discussion about Woody's current comp or any future comp are getting off topic and my question has been fully answered. If any moderator is reading this, can you please close the thread and let's start a new one specifically on the subject. That way everyone can contribute.

Thanks to all for your help, suggestions and support.
