Can someone explain these signals please?

Im looking at an old map of a small station. The line comes in as a single line (from the right). It splits to go into the station giving a double track through the station (lines 1 & 2) and a goods line (3). Lines 1 and 2 rejoin just after the station back to a single track. Now SP1 and 2 I understand - they are guarding the exits across the points. What I dont understand is why it requires both SP3 and 4 to the right of the junction? I can understand one signal being there but 2? And which way are they both facing?

Assuming left-hand side default sig position,

4 will (probably) be a bracket sig for the junction

1 and 2 are protecting the trailing side of the junction - possibly dwarf or ground sigs

3 will be the starter - it is protecting the first block beyond the station...

Antony,

You might find this site useful for UK signalling information:

http://www.signalbox.org/signals.shtml

There are a lot of signal box diagrams on the site already and they may have the station in question on there, if not someone on their forum may have a diagram for or possibly photos of the signalling at that station.
