Campaign to retain full DLS for TRS2004/06

After reading the bulk of the comments here, some for TS2010, some against, for the last four years I used TRS2006, before that, TRS2004 and I migrated to that from UTC, right now, I'm running TC1&2, simply because TRS2006 won't run on my version of Win7, I'm assuming that because my copy is one of the earliest, and the 5 CD's used to install it, plus the downloading and installation of SP1, something went strangely wrong with the game, anyway, its not working as it should.

So now I'm using TC1&2, right now I'm forced to, I'm looking forward to purchasing TS2010, after going through the screenshot thread for 2010, yes I'm impressed with it, while TC has its issues, (name a single version of Trainz that doesn't!), I'm reasonably happy with the results, sure I have to fix things to make them work, like using an RS3 interior in my SD40-2's to make them show up, let alone having to use an enginespec out of what does show up in rolling stock to make other rolling stock show up, but thats the nature of the beast, as much of the legacy content from older versions just won't show up for one reason or another.

When I migrated to my new computer, which is really just an off the shelf computer from Sam's Club, which has much better graphics and capabilities than say something in the same price range from Circuit City, for over a year I had been using a rental, which was a POS Dell, lower than low end, even when we sold the same model at Sam's Club as our low end comp, it was better than the rental I was using, and I was still able to run TRS2006, so with my new machine, I don't doubt that TS2010 will work fine, I looked at the 2010 screens, and am impressed by whats in it, so as soon as possible, I will be purchasing 2010, and I probably won't bother looking back, except maybe to TC to continue running my narrow gauge content, but its only a matter of time before even prowler's items will be compatible with TS2010.

Auran has to move on, there is an awfully lot of legacy content that is weighing them down, like any software manufacturer, they have had their mistakes, (TRS2006 being one), while TRS2004 was very stable, great working program, its time has passed, its time for Auran to move on, and I for one, am looking forward to actually recreating the Withlacoochee River in TS2010!

Oh and BTW, I read the wiki on the announced dropping of support for the older assets, Auran has made it clear that many of those older assets will still be on the DLS, and that those with older versions of Trainz will still be able to download those older assets that work for their version of the game, I'm wondering where so many got the idea that Auran is just going to trash everything?

Hi,

Thats because a lot of members try to read between the lines. Unfortunately they seem so intent on reading between the lines, they don,t read the original lines :)

Cheers, John

You got that right! Its always a conspiracy, its a vast right wing conspiracy!!!:hehe: :hehe: :hehe:

I guess I ought to sign on to this petition, although I ain't holding my breath for any policy change.

I'm right there with you. I support the campaign but it would take more than a 'weighty' thread to force a change. There is money at stake here and Auran need to make sure that the cash keeps coming to be able to keep working and developing

Are you implying that those posting their images in the TS2010 Screenshots thread are not using TS2010? That sound like a serious accusation
Look again in the above mentioned thread, lots of beautiful images from Iceman in there. Makes TS2010 look great but then if you've decided a priory that TS2010 is not good, you don't want to see them. :hehe:

Hello Martin,

No. I would not dream of questioning the integrity of any screenshot posters.

Casper.

I hesitate to return to this thread (not wanting to be seen to 'denigrate' any of the sensitive souls who are determined to stick with TRS04 until Hell freezes over). However, I wonder if I might post a brief message to any newbe or wouldbe train sim person who, while passing through these forums, is wondering whether to buy TS10 and may possibly be influenced by the Cassandra-like utterings of this and similar threads:

DON'T LISTEN TO THEM! THEY DON'T KNOW WHAT THEY'RE TALKING ABOUT! NONE OF THEM HAVE GOT TS10 OR HAVE EVER PLAYED IT! IT'S THE BEST VERSION OF TRAINZ EVER, PLEASE BUY IT!!!

There, sorry to shout, but I'd hate Auran to lose any sales because of this thread. :hehe:

Paul (supporting the future of Trainz, not the past)

Paul,

The purpose of this thread, which has meandered, was to put forward a suggestion which might have provided a solution for all regarding the DLS changes.

And, simply to give others a chance to support or otherwise.

That's all.

Casper

I agree that the most creative and realistic screen shots have come from 2004, 2006, and the TC's, many of them belonging to Mezzo. If ....and I mean "IF" Auran chooses to throw content users and creators of 2004 through TC under the bus, that will be a mistake.

Mezzo, your comments are right on target. It's unfortunate that some people twist your words and intentions around.

Why is it a solution for all, i have no problems.

I am quite satisfied with the status quo.

.....

That's not quite true. I have TS10. I'm not sure where you got your facts from. It may be the best version of Trainz ever (and maybe not), but it's a slide show on my old machine and therefore is hard to come to any definitive conclusion about it. That's one of the main reasons that I'm sticking with 04. At least there's very little stutter to it. I realize that I'm probably going to get left behind, but that's just the way it is.

I'll agree with you on one thing. I'd recommend buying it whether it's going to be used or not. I'm all for supporting Auran financially. After all, continued financial support is the only way to keep them around for us all.

Mike

Others have also reported a slide show with TS2010 until they upgraded their video drivers, then it was suddenly fast and smooth. What version is your video driver?

My computer is 9 years old, and running on life support at this time. I highly doubt updating video drivers would help anyone with computer's equal or older to my computer's age in running TS2010. Even with the most updated drivers, there is only so far they will help before old hardware becomes an issue.

I've updated all of my drivers. Updating drivers will only go so far.

Fair enough. Look, I accept your right to carry on playing TRS04 for ever and good luck to you. What I can't accept is that Auran should carry on supporting a 6 year old version of the game that really belongs in a museum and which can only undermine the commercial viability of the newest version of the game, ie. TS10. This is the version which I, and quite a few others, have invested in and we would like it to be given a chance to succeed. And this is more likely if the full focus on the DLS, and indeed these forums, is on the newest, and not old, versions of the game.

I really do feel that we've come to the parting of the ways here and if the community has to split over this issue then so be it. The 04 people can leave and go and do their stuff on their own independent websites or whatever and, as I said above, good luck to them. I mean, this is nothing new is it? Aren't there websites out there dedicated to 80s video arcade games and stuff? And probably people still playing them. TRS04 is no different!

So good luck to our TRS04 colleagues when they embark on their new 'heritage gaming' venture after September!

Paul (still playing Space Invaders, actually!)

Maybe they should re-brand 2004/06 and market them as ScreenShot Sims . Not sure why you bought the game in the first place ?? was it for the Trains or pretty little pictures ..... ROLF .

Be careful what you start here.

Many versions of Trainz must have been purchased on the basis of visitors thinking, "Hey, that looks good - I'll buy it!"

IMHO most of the really great shots have been created in earlier versions. And still are!

Auran have done well from that.

When you buy a car, do you go to the salesman and say 'I want a 6 year old car because I like the pictures of it'? People will see screenshots and buy Trainz without caring what version it is, and of course there are beautiful screenshots from previous versions, there have been 6 years to make them in. This does not mean that TS2010 can't provide the same.

I'd certainly expect a test drive.

First of all, Sciti, you don't get it, so don't put words in my mouth. I don't "play" this game, I invest time, money, and countless hours of research.

From the computer specs required to run the 2010 software, Trainz would BECOME a slideshow on my computer. That's a big problem for me, but maybe not you living at home snotnoses that live off their parent's income. Think first before you decide to quote me again.
