Cab Mode

I'm still enjoying driving mode through the current tutorials at the moment.

But one thing that I noticed was that when operating a passenger train, it's hard to determine how far down the platform to stop. How do you determine this yourself? Do you just... guess? (Cab Mode, not external view)

Also, is it possible (In TS12) to switch my driver from the right to left? I think this would help me, but I can't seem to find where to switch the drivers side. Is that even possible?

Thanks

I'm sure the standard is different around the world but a good average might be to have as many passenger cars as possible along the platform. This means having the locos stop just beyond the end of the platform.

If the cab has multiple views you can cycle through them by using the bracket keys [ and ] while in cab view. Not all cabs have a large range of views.

Edit: You can also rotate any view by holding the right mouse button and moving the mouse. If you have a mouse wheel then it will zoom the view.

Oh, so it depends on the loco used. So if someone designed 2 interior view points, then I could use left/right hand views. I've only used built-in ones so far in the tutorials.

But thanks though, I'm still learning the controls. And still learning to guess how far I need to stop based on my speed. (i.e. not overshoot the platform by a few hundred meters)

Yes, different locos have different views but most have left and right. Getting the stopping right is mostly a matter of experience.

Open the Trainz folder, then open the text file called Trainoptions, type at the bottom "-FreeIntCam" and save.
Now you can move around any cab in any direction using the arrow keys or move up and down by pressing the "page Up" or "page Down" keys.

Simple, in the real world, theres a little sign that says "Car Stop", usually with the number of cars, count the cars you are driving, like a 4 car EMU and look for the sign that matches it, e.g. 3 car stop (nope, wouldn't stop there), 6 car stop (oh, there it is), etc.

If you ever wander into Surveyor, you can use the ruler tool and use the appropiate sign if you can access the DLS, or if you cant, use something that you can use as a guide, like a bench, a brick (the Watercress Line uses that at Ropley, a brick in the 6 foot) or etc. As a general rule, most UK rail cars are round about 20m long, however, Mk3s are 23m long, as are the Wessex electrics, Class 444s desiros, Class 156, Class 158, Class 170, Class 171, Class 323, Class 390 and the Class 165/166 turbo units (Theres a lot more I haven't mentioned) and the electric Networkers are 21m long.

How do you work this out? Simple, 5x23m = 115m, add some error room (e.g. 5m) and then plonk your marker where the 120m marker is.

Does that make sense?

Thanks for all the replies so far guys.

I will give the -FreeIntCam a try to see if I can move the camera so I can get a better view. That might help me in judging my distances.

As for looking for signs on the platforms, you know I had completely forgotten to consider looking for them!

As mentioned, it takes some experience. So far I only have about 2 hours driving experience, and 3 tutorial sessions finished. (I wish there was more though)
