I'm back. >:]
This has got to be the COOLEST Huge Late 1800s 4-8-0 There Ever was... Wait, Oh Yeah, It WAS the ONLY One!

Only one? Doubt it--I've seen pics of several Mastodons in my books that are extremely similar.

If you want a seriously obscure engine, look up El Gobernador--the only 4-10-0 ever built. It was a failure and wasn't used often.

I actually was going to Post El Gobernador as Well. Poor Thing Only Lasted a Few Years because it FAILED. :(

But it didnt intiraly fail. It was scheduled to be by the station when a passenger train went by while it was switching.:D :D :D :D

Yes, there were plenty of Mastodon's then, and they inspired the Central Pacific to make theirs. What Sam probably means there was only one 4-8-0 on the CP. The engine was successful, but they wouldn't let its builder make any more, instead had him make the biggest engine of the time!

I dunno if I'd consider that 4-10-0 a faliure, but it definitely was ahead of its time! Its boiler was too small, as was its tender, which really limited its power, etc.

One of the 4-10-0's biggest problems was the narrow firebox.

The GN had quite a few 4-8-0's even tho driver diameter limited speeds to less then those requiring a 4-wheel lead truck.

I still like them tho, lol.
