Bummed out from computer shopping !

Which would you get: AMD FX4100 @ 3.6ghz or Intel i3 3220 @ 3.3ghz ? Intel benchmarks slightly above the AMD. For future upgrade, can an i5 be swapped? Are there MoBo's that will accept both chips?
Quad core v. Dual core. Which does Trainz like better?

Thanks a bizzallion.

i3's are the sort of things which are good but given that you can get a decent i5, like the 3550, for a few dollars more really does make you question whether they are any good.

The new pile-driver series by AMD like the FX8350 seem to be very good however a 4 core one will probably be decent enough to run trainz at good fps :) Looking at prices here in UK, 4300 is £86 which is very good value for 4 core processor.

With regards to chip swapping, you can only swap processors which have the same socket like LGA 2011 cannot be swapped with a LGA 1155. Also AMD to Intel processor swap in the same socket is a big no.

It's all down to which you prefer, what your budget is and what sort of things you run aside from trainz. As far as I know, Trainz currently doesn't care about your core amount, just the clock speed and how much Vram you have.

wow trainz dosent use any more than 2 cores, no wonder i have hardly seen an improvement on my machine! and yes, an i3 is a bit weak, and AMD are usiualy better priced

Regarding only using two cores, will some of you who have more than two cores just look at performance monitor when in Driver / Surveyor and tell me if that looks like it's only using two cores? as My i7 appears to be using 4 threads with 4 parked that's just TS12 and the OS everything else shut down. It's also noticeable on a 6 core Phenom but the load isn't equally balanced as with the i7.

Not bummed any longer!! Just ordered new desktop: Intel i3 3220 @ 3.3Ghz, 8gigs of DDR3, 500G 7200rpm HDD, nVidia GT610 1G form Amazon $509.99 out the door! Not "high-end" by any means but helluva upgrade from my laptop! Boxed version of TS2012 (bought @ 75% off recently) waiting to load.

i5-2500K (4 cores).

The spike on the 2 lesser used cores is where I had CM running when I realized I should slow down the reporting speed.

After the spikes are in driver running a session on Clinchfield.

There are 2 busy cores, but the other 2 aren't doing much at all.
