Building layouts

I find this to be a major shortcoming. Its the reason I stopped using '04. Now with '06 out the situation remains. More interactive industries available but you can't use them without being confined to that place."

I agree. Since I mostly work in DCC mode, what I will sometimes do is place the WAIT FOR driver command between the arrival at the interactive industry and the LOAD / UNLOAD command. I can set it at up to an hour, and when I am free, I can go to that industry and watch the action unfold. I dont yet work with a timetable or sorts, so this at least allows me some flexibility to not only move about the layout, but to also see the industries at work. Love those large layouts though !!

My route is a combination of way-freight operations and passenger train running which is both long distance and short commuter trains. So depending upon which mood I'm in, I will sometimes take over a freight after the AI pulls into one of the yards, sort the cars from the consist with the local switcher, and send the AI driver on his way to one of the other portals on one day.

On another day, I'll take one of the long distance passenger trains and ride to the current end of the line, or mosey back and forth on a 20-minute commuter run. At the current distance of 89 miles, this is quite a run, and a lot happens along the way.

Hello Nicky, I saw your thread and thought this site may be of some help with terrain files and stuff for your assistance in layout building. I hope that some others may find it useful as well. There are a lot of downloads of mountains, etc, but I hope you will find it helpful.

Happy trainzing.

If you intend to use a model railroad track plan, consider leting it cover a much larger area in Trainz. I have done this with my Elko and Lincoln, originally a 5.5 x 10 foot Nscale in my garage, and "my" Gorre and Defetid, both on the DLS and requiring no third party content.

What do you mean by "veterans"?

What I mean is those experienced folks that have been building Trainz layouts for years. I have only about 6 months of actually doing it. I downloaded layouts and modified them to my taste prior to that. I was just referring to those that have a vast in-depth knowledge of Trainz route building. I was not referring to military personnel.

Oh sure there are ways to facilitate matters. With judicious use of the couple/uncouple commands and marker placement one could have a driver make a setout or pickup. But it would be a one-shot use because those commands require specific ID of the car(s) concerned.

I'm not designing a model trackplan. But that IS my backround in layout planning. So much so that I find myself cramming trackage into a minimum area, using tunnels and vertical terrain, etc. A lot of re-dos cuz of that lol.

You mean, I can actually upload my completed route and someone else can do some nice terrain on it?

Sure, I change terrain all the time. Throw in mountains, rivers, and delete stuff too. The requirements are basically you cannot redistribute it, and can only use it for personal use. My understanding is, and I am not an attorney, is that if you download anything, you can change it for your personal use only. For example, I changed the config file so some planes could be raised further up than the creator intended. But I cannot redistribute that file without his / her permission.

Just make sure that if you upload the layout, you dont have items from someone else on it that you have modified. You want them to get full credit, and you would want their permission. At least that is what I have read. There must be a FAQ addressing this at the top of this page. Read through them before you upload anything.
