Bold Threads in the Forum

dricketts

Trainz Luvr since 2004
I noticed my threads used to be in bold type when someone had replied. That feature hasn't seemed to be working lately.

What causes a thread to be bold type?

Are you logged in to the forums? If a thread has new posts since the last time you visited the forum, that's what generates the bold type.

If you set up your CP correctly, you should be notified by email when someone replies to any thread you subscribe to. You can also subscribe to any thread, whether you post to it or not.

Something is wrong. I had to check the individual thread this morning. No bold type. I had several new responses I would have never know about unless I dug into the particular thread.

I wonder if it would do any good to message the help desk?

I have noticed that if I don't check the forum for X amount of time, all of the threads become unbolded. Which is annoying.

dricketts ,

Just a thought , have you ticked the box ' remember me ' , or do you log in each time you visit ?

dricketts, There are many things about the Forum software that aren't perfect. The easiest way around your problem is to change some settings in your UserCP (Top left - sort of)
  1. Go to Edit Options
  2. then Messaging & Notification
  3. In the 2nd item Default Thread Subscription Mode: change the setting to Instant Email Notification from the dropdown list.
Then sit back and relax. Provided you subscribe to a link, you will be notified by email every time someone posts to the thread. It's one of the few things about the forum that's perfect!

Please don't contact the help desk, that's not what they're there for.

Thanks.

I do have remember me checked.

I'll look into subscribing to email notifications.

That's a rather strange response. The mere fact that you have to go to the forum thread and open it to see if there are any new messages, means that you DO NOT have the item checked. Here you are, wanting to contact the Help Desk, when the problem is in your own hands, but all you can say is "I'll look into it." I think you should have made the alteration before posting, then your problems would be over and no further communication would have been necessary.

Bold type for new posts is not the issue here. being notified when people reply to the thread you are subscribed to is all that matters!

This forum acts similar to all other forums: it keeps cookie in your browser cache and it tracks the last time you have visited this forum. Then it displays thread title in bold font for every new thread or any thread that has new replies since your last visit.

I guess check your cookie settings. Which browser do you use, by the way?
I have no problems on IE8, just be sure you allowed cookies for this site (check for red icon at the bottom of IE window while browsing this forum).

You can try to clear your cookie cache completely (you will have to log in to every site and forum that you have "Remember me" setting on).

Another troubleshooting tip for you: check your time zone settings in User CP - Edit settings.
Also check if any antivirus program was set to block cookies.

Azol, I never delete cookies, but many of the posts in the Trainz forums slip under my wing. I use the Quick Links / Todays Posts which seems to be the most reliable, but many posts I've never read are in normal type and many are not represented. I find "New Posts" hopeless. After reading them, I can then go to a specific area and find dozens of threads or posts I haven't seen before.

dricketts has another problem. He says he has to go to the forum, locate his own thread, then check if there are any new posts. This means that he is not being notified by email when someone posts to one or more of his subscribed threads. The solution is in his UserCP.

I use Firefox by the way, but the forum software itself isn't all that brilliant. It has one of the worst search algorithms I've ever seen. I even visited the forum web site and found it quite amazing that the search facility doesn't allow for filters or Booleans. It's basically a single keyword search box, and that's it! The stupid part about it is that any 14 year old computer student could fix that. I have a limited knowledge of PHP, but I've written better search algorithms myself.

Actually vBulletin is one of the better forum tools available. Maybe as good as PHPbb (no religious debate , please) but still quite good. Generally if something isn't working, it is either something the user did or a change by the site administrator.

Azol, I don't think vBulletin is using locally stored cookies. I've been on the forum from two different systems and it is getting the unseen posts right regardless of the system.

dricketts, after you log in (or set 'Remember Me') try selecting 'New Posts'. The result is all the posts since your last visit from newest to oldest. If you're a frequent visitor (once a day or more) there should only be 100 or so new posts which is a fairly quick scan.

All these comments are helpful I guess, but if the guy doesn't set his options to send him emails when someone posts to his thread, he may as well go and buy himself a blanket and learn to send smoke signals.

Who pissed in your Aussie cereal this morning Johnk? Chill!

I guess I really hit a nerve attached to your ego referencing the help desk. Let me guess you're another disgruntled, underpaid, overworked, software engineer that has excellent people skills. That's why your desk at work is in the basement.

All I confirmed was the freakin box is checked for logging into the forum. My original threads are not showing in bold when someone replies with their post. They always have until recently.

If I'm really wasting your precious time from feeding Kangaroos then don't respond to my post.

Thanks to all others that responded.

Can you please do another test: navigate to the upper right corner of the forum window and locate the section that says:

Welcome, [usen name].
You last visited: [time of last visit]

Do you believe the forum is able to correctly detect the time of your last visit?
If so, go to the bottom of the forum window and check this line:

All times are [your time zone]. The time now is [your local time].

If all these display correct information, I have run out of ideas. :)
