Just had out laptop shut down on a blue screen.

Something along the line of windows detected an error 7 shutdown to stop damage of HD corruption

It than said to run chkdsk & disable antivirus etc

tech info

***stop : 0x00000024 (0x00190203,0x87638820,0x0000103,0x0000000)

Have tried to start up in safe & other startup options but it still comes back to this screen.

Any ideas short of a reformat of the HDD

Thanks ajho
Now fixed & so far running fine .
Booted from the winxp disk & ran chkdsk through repair console.Took awhile to run but booted fine when it finished.

I have no idea blue screen just came up suddenly with the error number shown in my 1st post & that's all the info I could get as it always booted to the error screen.

No new programs were installed or nothing unusual was being done when it happened.just reading a forum topic when the screen turned blue

Personally I'd be thinking about replacing the hard disk. A file system corruption with no obvious cause is almost certainly a hardware issue, either disk or memory.

Memory failure is just a nuisance but, no matter how good your back ups, a hard disk going is always traumatic.

Check your Event Viewer, system tab. It may show that a delayed disk write failed, or other HDD problem. When the HDD is starting to fail, you can often find clues in the event log.

I agree with the others here. This is a sign of bad things to come. Replace your hard disk when you can.

Is your drive making any weird sounds? Don't even consider thinking about replacing your drive, replace it right away!
