Blue Comet

Hmmm.... well, I guess I had my hopes set too high, from about the No.2 driver back the locomotive looks rushed, front looks good, very well done, but that stops. That cabs looks like a quick job with parts robbed from different cabs. Tender doesn't look near done, especially in the unlined scheme shots. The car interiors... well they're not Ocemy's... and exteriors don't look too bad, but ~US$23 I don't think it's worth it, now if it all were as detailed as the first 10 ft of the locomotive. I'd definitely buy it, but now that I see it I'm glad I didn't.

If you swap out the tender it can even look a bit like an Erie K5, although the glow in the dark train numbers under the cab windows are a bit unfortunate.

Hey, Folks,

thanks for the kind comments, and also for the honesty we may not always love to hear. It is always valuable to receive constructive feedback.

Of course we'd have loved to spend twice as long developing it, at this stage however it is an experiment to see if producing such packages is a profitable avenue for N3V.

Personally I hope it's succesful because I thoroughly enjoyed the opportunity to work on it. Possibly I tried to do a little too much with the interiors. During my research phase I was very quickly inspired by the Lionel Blue Comet, and how Joshua Cowan had gone to such lengths to try and recreate the splendour of the prototype.

The 'flatware' :hehe: was a conscious decision after putting so much detail into the galley and pantry sections. I was very tempted to use some tableware I have from 'My First Trainz' and perhaps in future I will. ;)

I am fairly sure that at some stage there'll be an opportunity to update the product so go your hardest on it and we'll see what we can do for it. Please take the lit cabside numbers on the P47 as duly noted. :)

I am also reasonably sure we can work out some arrangement for aliasing the meshes, I realise this 'is no longer supported by CCP' or words to that effect but I reckon it still works. I'll test it out and look into the possibility of sharing the textures.

I can't make any specific promises about any of this until I have discussed it with the team, naturally, but we are always glad to improve on our products if we realistically can.

So thankyou to those who have purchased the pack so far, and be sure to let us know what you think.

Cheers!

 Hi Rob

Sorry mate i havent got it yet ( duel to other commitments ) BUT from what i have seen you have done a splended Job with it, Keep up the great work. :D

Just teasing about the flatware Rob. I actually thought it was quite neatly done. I hope this kind of thing turns out to be a profitable venture for you all, and I would think that aliasing might help as it would make the specific loco appeal to a wider range of modelers.

From what you showed I do not think it was worth it to buy this model, I prefer to download the models made by Lookseek and PiotraKap-a, which are free.

The world has gone to the dogs. Why do you want to get money for this stuff? Selling a locomotive without a shadow and great textures is not a good idea. If you wish to see locomotives definitely worth purchasing, take a look:

Amazing, isn't it? What is more, these beauties are totally free. Shame on you.

Rob, would it be possible to release just the alpha maps for the loco/cab textures and to say what materials were used (tbumpgloss or tbumpenv)? Quite a few of us are struggling to get the shiney/less shiney effect out of one material...

That's my beef with some of these payware companies, particularly a few certain payware groups(and you know who you are)! Their engines are nice, but I just don't see enough in them to justify paying for them.

Although, I got the Blue Comet. It was somewhat pricey, but I think it was well worth it! I don't mind not being able to reskin it. Actually, I think it's perfect as it is!

I did purchase it and I think it's great and for the price, can't complain at all. Great job to everyone who worked on this project. Hope there are more packages in the works.

I couldn't agree more! This is FAR too expensive. Add ten AUS $ and you buy the S&C add-on pack which has numerous routes, engines et cetera and almost weekly extra free content. This is for me a definite no-no.

Well I hope this add-on pack is a success as I'd like to see Auran issuing more add-ons as an alternative business model to issuing new versions of the game each year! :hehe:

Me too. Although $25 is a bit much, I'll get it eventually. Just got a couple of other things I want to get first.:)

Good work Rob. It looks awesome.

Hi All

In regards to the pack being payware. This pack is a test to see if such a venture will be viable. If it is, you may see further packs similar to this released by us in future.

As a few have commented, it is also intended to help keep development of Trainz continuing, without releasing new versions too close together.

As to the cost.

Based off existing payware prices, I worked out the following.

3 locos at $10 each (most payware steam loco's I've seen are about $10 each), so total of $30 for the locos

5 carriages at about $4-5 per car, which is about $25 total.

The above is just a gneralised example of what you would pay for the items separately from 3rd party groups. Actual prices will, of course, vary.

As to the payware vs freeware argument. I would ask that users please keep this argument out of all payware threads/threads based around payware items. Granted, you have creators in your country who are happy to create good/high quality items for free. However, not everyone feels that way. Or, in the case of this pack, this was built by our internal artist, Uncle Rob. He was paid to do the work, since it is his job. As above, the pack is a test to see if this is a viable avenue to help support the continued development of Trainz.

I really like it, the sound and smoke effect are exeptional. I hope to see some other pack (like the Sierra #3) in the future. Great work. Thanks! The price, as it has been told, is for 3 locomotive and 5 cars, I would say its correct.

Really, it isn't that bad. I would have preferred if there was actually a route to run it on, and while I am tempted to make one, I am currently too busy on a different route.

Really Auran/Rob, this might be a great way for you to make money. I would love to see more steamers and stuff like that. Hell, if you made a Reading T-1 pack I would surely buy it. (As in, the American Freedom train version, Chessie Steam Special, D&H style with the added elephant ears, Freight style, and Iron Horse Ramble decorated ones.)

Really though, I am ecstatic over the loco.

And really guys, it isn't that bad. It seems like they are actually listening about the flaws as well. I have seen quite a few pics of the actual loco, and really, they did it justice in my opinion.
