Basic help please

Hi all,
Total newbie to trains and Trainz.
I have spent many hours trying to move a consist from Fort William to Mallaig.
The AI driver can do it with ease, but if I take over I am stopped at a signal in Ft. William.
I take it that when I take over all instructions are void and the Controller has no clue as to what I am trying to achieve.
You may tell me I am an idiot, then put me right.
BTW 2010 edition.

Welcome to Trainz
AI does indeed control all aspects of the consist and reads the commands you gave the driver. As soon as you stop AI all control is in your hands, this includes setting the junctions ahead of you. The reason for the red signal is more than likely that the next junction after the signal is against you. Two ways to change direction is click on the red and green arrow so green shows on your track or press J key. Have fun.

Thanks for the help.
Have taken a large consist of coal to Mallaig, dropping off two wagons at the siding in Glenfinnan then spinning around the consist to park it in the goods siding at Mallaig.
This has given me a good grounding in signals and points.
