bad news trainz

If you mean what is called MinWin then it is still ongoing work which started before Vista. Some of that work is in Vista and more in Server 2008 and even more will be in Windows 7 apparently, though with Vista SP1 its core was updated to that of Server 2008 so that they are the same. MinWin is not meant or planned to be a product in it's own right.

Thanks. :D

XP may not be installed in ready-built computers from July 1st 2008. (OEM license.)

XP license retail (disc) is still beeing sold - for how long, who knows?

Support for XP will extend to the year 2014. (At which time, Vista may be up to par or forgotten.)

mmm, my buddy just bought a new computer with xp on one week ago..
he could have goten vista on it but eh wanted xp fpr right now

My main pc is XP and I have a Dell laptop with Vista and Trainz was installed with no bother so I can take it with me. But two months ago i bought a scond pc and managed to get it complete with XP for my general stuff.

XP obsolete never I still run Windows 98 it works fine.

XP obsolete never.:hehe: What kills me is just because a software maker says their not going to support a product that means you have to upgrade to the latest product. I have a network and one computer runs windows 98 just fine. As a matter of fact I have had more trouble with XP machine than 98 machine. You can still get XP if you know where to look or windows 98 for that matter. I still run TRS2004 even though Auran refuses to support it.

What other people do is fashion what I do is style.:p

i was hearing that ether by 2010 and 2009,windows XP will not be sold in any store, any website, but vista will become more stable then before, which i did hear, but im not sure if TRS 2006 or classics will be able to work with it.

2014 is when they'll stop supporting it.

I'm running XP Home on my PC and still get updates on it.
Running XP Professional at work, same thing.

By the time Vista is "stable", they'll have built two new versions of Windows to replace it with.

BTW, one of the reasons why I went so long with WIN98SE was to wait until all the bugs were worked out of XP. :p

I'll probably do the same on the next OS upgrade, maybe in about 10 years from now. Let others find the bugs.

most of you in this thread are simply stupid. i can't think of another way to say it. vista works fine and also works fine with trs 04 and 06 and 09. there isnt anything unstable about vista except its users. word of mouth gave vista a bad name because some idiots dont know how to use it. it is a nice stable operating system. ive had one bluescreen in almost a year now from an app called manycam. ive had one HD crash and vista let me know before it crashed that it was about to die so i had some time to get data off of it. i havnt booted to xp in months though i do have it on the other drive ONLY because the cd protection for max 5 does not run in vista... and that isnt a vista fault, its the old protection not understanding a new os. all this hype about vista not working is just that - hype.

I use a computer running Windows 98 in connection with my work at home. I do so because of the initial cost of the software packages I require and because I can't see the need to upgrade and then have to spend more cash just to run the same software and achieve the exact same result.
The computer concerned has never been connected to the internet so Windows 98 is in its original state and has never received any updates.
It runs Trainz 2004 without any problems.
For me the eternal trudge of updating this and updating that is overwhelming. Sometimes it's easier just to opt out and if your system does everything you want, why change?
My son has a degree in computing. He can't understand why I don't want everything right up to date and going faster and faster. He spends most of his time updating while I get on with enjoying Trainz.

Ian

Currently I'm running a desktop on XP and a laptop on Vista.

I dont mind Vista at all, it is a little unintuitive compared with XP, but you get used to that. What don't I like about it? Well, not much, if I'm honest. I dont like the start menu; I much prefered the separate bar when you clicked all programs, and I would prefer an option of something like the XP start menu, rather than just Vista and Classic. The only other thing is the options for switching off and logging off, but I'm nitpicking now. The only other issue is the number of processes running, currently my laptop doesnt have that much on it, but it's running 73 processes, compared to the desktop which is full of crap and running loads of unnecessary programs, which usually sits in the low 60s.
Apart from these, I have no problems with Vista, and I got used to it pretty quickly.

BTW, one of the reasons why I went so long with WIN98SE was to wait until all the bugs were worked out of XP. :p

I personally stuck with 98SE until 2004 before upgrading to XP SP1. I do have Vista now--my laptop died and I couldn't get a cheap enough one with XP so I had to deal with Vista. I can't install XP either due to chipset conflicts--so I've had to live with it.

Anyway, on topic:

I've run TRS2006 in Vista and XP--seems to work just fine in either. No framerate drop in Vista even with Aero on. Laptop won't run TRS in Vista at all, integrated video is the most likely reason.

I'll be fine with Vista--when I can get some hardware to actually run it! Ten gigs of RAM...twenty cores....5gb video card....:p

There's nothing wrong with Vista, really, outside of being gaudy overpriced bloatware. Now that the specs of the basic computers have been doubled to keep up with the new Windows, you can run other programs at the same time as Vista is running.
Sadly, I'm a low brow nobody who just wants the computer to run my Trainz without all the decorative features they spent so much money on. Maybe if they made an OS that just operated the system I might be tempted. If I didn't use Google Earth, I'd be very happy with 98SE.

First, although Wikipedia can be helpful at times, I would not (repeat not) rely on an encyclopedia that can be edited by ANYONE that sees fit. A fight had already been going on, and these two groups were editing to suit their own agenda, and YES they were two rail enthusiast forums.

Second, to the original poster, a better heading next time. "bad news trainz", does not give a good enough description of what the subject is all about.

And thirdly, although advise on here is welcome about operating programs, I think we should be talking to computer experts to see if game/program X is suited to operating system Y.

XP TO BE WITHRAWN???

Hi All,
I have just loaded Service Pack 3 to my XP professional. This operating system is the main one used by companies and professionals all over the planet. It is, after all, just an operating system and most users don't really want one of these to play around with!
Just to launch applications, use printers, scanners, card readers disk writers, etc.
I dont't think that Microsoft would be stupid enough to stop supporting XP for a long time to come.
They only last year stopped supporting '98 and ME I still use those OSs on 2 other computers as some of the older hardware and applications won't work with P4,and XP (professional sound cards for instance). but the last lot of updates for these are still available,
A few years yet, I am sure, so no panics?

Xp demise

Hi all - I work for Westingouse rail systems and the company approached Microsoft regarding XP. A lot of our stuff runs on 2000 but the control systems have XP. Microsoft assured us that (as ferngren said) it will be supported untill 2014 and the new version will be 7. Work has started on this windows 7 (it will get a snazzy name I am sure) and Vista is in the bin. It will go the way of ME.

If that helps...........

Micro$oft has already decided the official name will be windo:sleep:e 7.

It's amazing how a few rumours can ruin the reputation of a product. I've never used Vista, but what's been said about it is enough to turn me away.
As another poster said, many people don't want to take the time to learn how to use it; and consequently Vista is trashed because of it.

How would this be bad news for Trainz?

The vista run

Hi - I have nothing against vista but from all I have heard and read I don't think it had a chance. It needed too much memory and was resource hungry. There were not enough drivers and if there were any at all! A lot of providers were slow to put together anything that would enhance Vista. Half the time the drivers would not work at all or properly.

How many times have I seen something posted here with someone getting upset because their Trainz does not seem to work with Vista. There must be a lot of forums for a variety of things and they will be full of the same.

Windows 98 did not work properly until service pack 2. Xp was a mess until that got sorted out. Trainz 2009 will need all the bugs ironed out before it finally manages to do what it says on the tin. It is the way of software and what works very well on my computer is just a bag of nails on yours. Why? Who knows, it is just the way it goes but for whatever reason, the knives were out for Vista from the start. I never saw a review that had much of anything good to say about Vista - and all this from the "experts"! Perhaps there were too many versions of Vista and people were confused.

The damage is done. There will not be any more updates for Vista but I bet some of its best features will be included in the NEW Windows  7

New OS ON WAY?

Just before my local PC shop closed, thier mechanic told me that Microsfot are arleady beta testing anew OS to REPLACE vista and it will debut around 2010/11.

I don't know if it's a rebadged and debugged Vista or a new approach. Basically that's all the info I have:(

It's called windows 7 (that is the official name), and Microsoft are predicting a release data of Christmas 2009, so you can expect it out Christmas 2010. It is supposed to be a very upgraded version of Vista. Like XP was to NT
