Automatic Car Tagger

One of the things that would be great to have is a proper automatic car tagger system for cars (like Run8 and Railroader has). Sure I can manually rename the cars (though not in the Config.txt due to issues I ran into trying), but that's not something I want to do.

In Railroader, cars are tagged based on destination and if they are loaded or empties. Their badge changes color (more of a visual reference for drivers), and generates a the new destination.

Where I ran into issues with CDEs tagger is the under the company heading. If you have the C&O route that uses the car tagger, there is a company column that displays "C&O" which I know if pulling from the config.txt for the rolling stock. After looking at the stock I have there's nothing remotely close to that. So instead of my railroad co. name, it would say RBOX which is the name of the boxcar I use.

In Run8 you can open the GUI for the car, and you can rename it there.

For the record I'm not a programmer.

Not sure exactly what your trying to accomplish here, but you can modify the tag with this rule

CDE Wagon Tags Display Rule
<kuid:647907:100954>

Wagon Tags Display Rule revised by permission from trev999 to CDE Trainz.

A rule to display and manage wagon tags in Driver mode. Multiple lines of text can be added to individual wagons or locomotives; this text is displayed at the top of the screen. Click on the traincar link to toggle the window background between transparent and opaque. An added tag is placed below the selected one. To add a tag above the top line, first duplicate the top tag by adding it, click OK and then edit the top tag to the required text.

It is actually quite simple.
Logs are cut at a lumber camp (auto tagged "lumber camp") until filled.
Cut logs then go to a sawmill (re tagged to "your sawmill"), until it is empty. It is then retagged automatically to go back to the lumber camp (rinse and repeat)
Pulpwood goes to a paper mill (auto retagged to a "paper mill") empties would be retagged automatically to the lumber camp.

If you play Railroader you'll see what I mean.

I've been looking for a flexible way of doing this in trainz for a couple years. Having the automated retagging of cars at industries over time would be great for keeping track of where specific cars are 'billed to' next. I haven't messed with the CDE Wagon Tags rule mentioned in post #2 until this evening and it seems like it's a partial solution but is still very reliant on a lot of user input for every time an industry is switched (how many cars in a consist are being re-tagged needing to be specified in a case-by-case basis, automated tag updates only taking place when an engine is coupled, for example).

For a while I was trying to find a good way of using the 'Toggle Vehicle Name Visibility' shortcut (ctrl+N by default?), which sticks a big helpful name above each car, as a way of seeing next destination similar to how you would see above cars in run8 or Railroader, but I have yet to find a quick way to retag cars in bulk rather than one-by-one individually. Surveyor 2.0 got my hopes up in that you can select multiple railcars and change the name in the info panel but it unfortunately only updates the name for the first railcar selected...
