Hello Trainzers and Valued Moderators,

Lately a small issue has been brought to my attention, and I'm sure it has also begun to bug the "majority" of you Trainzers as well.
I am requesting that a small rule be put in the CoC concerning typing.
"Shouting" as it is sometimes called, has lately been getting on my nerves.
Now, I completely understand that at times it is necessary, such as Red_Rattler's recent post concerning a petition.
He actually meant to bring attention to it, necessary attention that is.
However, certain other members use all capitals all the time, and in my opinion, is quite annoying.
This is not to say that we shouldn't be allowed to type in capitals when necessary, however it needs to be used with discretion.
Such as posts that are obviously not bringing a "LOUD" tone.

Please forgive me if this post has taken any of your valueable time, but please also consider what I have stated.

Cheers,
Woody:wave:

Hi Woody,

While I do understand the essence of your post/request and I do see many Trainzers here admonish someone who has posted in CAP's.

But, in real life, there may be extenuating conditions that the poster using caps may not be able to overcome.

For example:

An older member who may be visually disadvantaged, or any member who may be visually disadvantaged regardless of age.

A poster who has a broken keyboard that is stuck on CAPS, and perhaps does not have the financial means to purchase a new keyboard.

So, the question back to you Woody is.... how would the MODS be able to differentiate between someone deliberately posting in CAPS, or someone having the extenuating circumstances I mentioned above?

What are your feelings about someone using larger font sizes?

Regards... and have fun
Ron

I don't really see the need for this rule. No offense or anything, but it is just lettering. We have a wide range of ages on these forums. Capital letters are consider yelling, but is it really that big of a deal? I also dislike the use of all capital letters without reason. What is my solution? I just read it and move on.

I guess when it comes down to it... There are so many more important things to be worried about. Divert your energy to something more productive. Like sitting in front of your computer building a fictional railroad network. :Y:

You are the only person that can control how you feel.

Good thing the forum in old Rome was not the electronic kind or they would all be accused of shouting. (Hint, Look up Latin)

Actually, as long as reasonable care is taken with spelling and grammar, the overall look doesn't bother me that much. There are even times when I could use a larger font size, the old peepers are not what they used to be.

Yes, I can see your point there Ron, and it is a very good one.
However, sometimes I feel a person can judge the situation, say when a post has something useful, that could be the type of situation you are refering to, or you might have one of these:

"I AGREE WITH THAT STATEMENT!"

The above is exactly what I am talking about, and that is another thing, I feel that small, generally ignored posts like that one need to count as +post count posts. Which violates the CoC.
I and others have been seeing quite a bit of this lately, and I'm sure there are at least two people out there who can back up my statement.
There needs to be less of that around here, I'm tired of coming onto one my, or someone else's threads thinking "Hey, someone has posted!" and what do you know, it's one of them again.
Do you see what I'm saying?

I do not know what to tell you Woody, other than if you see this from 1 or more posters... just put them on "ignore".

Hope your doing well.

ron

Well, You are right about that.
Perhaps I could put them on ignore, its just some of those posts make the entire thread look...bad.

I'm doing fine, hope you are too.

I do agree with you on what you posted above, I have seen this a few times through out the forums, it doesn't really bother me that much, but I know it can be frustrating for others, when you have taken time out to help someone who may be stuck with something, and you have done your best to give as much information as you can to try and help them, only to find a reply under your post like this...

"I AGREE WITH THAT STATEMENT!"

and you think, why didn't you put something constructive instead of boosting your post count up...

I'm with you on this woody, but there is not a lot we can do, other than ignore it and move on, don't let small things get you down, life is too short...

Woody, what if people that can't hear vary well get mad at people for not typing in caps because they can not hear you. Than they start to to ask the mods for a new rule that every one must type in caps so they can hear.:hehe:

WOULD YOU PUT YOUR SELF ON THE IGNORE LIST?

CHEERS,
JRT

PS: MY USERNAME IS IN CAPS, DO YOU WANT ME TO CHANGE IT TO "jrt"?

---------

Anyway, I am just having some fun with you Woody. I really don't see the problem with members typing in caps.

Some good valid points here. New members can be excused here if it's their first post, but members who constantly use caps can be irritating. One other thing that really makes me cringe is the use of "text speak". That should be left for mobile use. Whats your view on that Woody?.

What is "Text Speak"? Is that like Speech to Text programs such as Dragon. I use those programs everyday, with out them. No one could understand my posts if I did not use these programs. My spelling is terrible because I have dyslexia. But please keep in mind, just because I can not spell does not mean I am dumb (I think:eek: )

What i mean by text speak is when some one types "ow did u do dat" instead of "how did you do that" or they use "g8" instead of "great". Like your self with your dyslexia i can understand where your coming from. A lot of people i know suffer from dyslexia. Its just the way some people are lazy by using text speak when posting.

Good to see we have some good opinions with this one!
Joe and stationbeem, I appreciate your posts very much, highly constructive!:D
"Text Speak" also known as 'Chat Speak" is often refered to the use of such statements as: LOL, IMHO, IMO, LMAO, KMA, and others.

What is my opinion on that?
It does not belong here.
Chat Speak belongs on websites such as Facebook and MySpace, online chat rooms, cell phone text messages etc.
I feel that they are very immature statements and quite a few people don't even know what they mean, I do know what the above mean, some are not appropriate in some aspects.
I can understand using "LOL" a few times, given how it is practically the same as this ":hehe:" which simply means "Laugh out Loud".
That I can take, heck, members such as GFisher even use that one.
However, constant use of these abbreviations is un-called for.
I once heard someone say, "Spell out you dang words!"

Dislexia, poor eyesight, people who's native language is not English.... the list could go on. Sometimes instituting a new rule may offend or create more issues than help.

If someone wants to shout, let'em. Sometimes it helps. Kept my computer and this game from flying out the window on a few occasions. Someone wants to pad their post count, let'em. No skin off of me. If someone wants to agree with what was said, what else is their to post but "I agree". Still a valid input to a conversation in my opinion.

I know very intelligent and articulate people who can't spell or who's writing looks like a pre-schoolers. Way to many variables to start making rules, especially when a polite "correction" usually clears up the situation.

This is a train simulator. As an old time retired CB&Q agent/operator I can tell you that everything on the railroad was in all caps. The old Royal typewritter that I used to type freight bills on and Western Union telegrams on was only all caps. The teletype that I used to type up consists on was all caps. I lived for several years without a shift key and didn't miss it.:D

JRT

Sorry from one Dyslexic to another, its no excuse at all for using capitals wrong or bad spelling, I tried to use it once as an excuse in a court when I was being questioned over a badly written report, I told the judge my spelling was not the best due to having Dyslexia and his reply was well you not the only one get over it buy a dictionary.

Oh boy was I put in my place.

Once again, we see some very good points on both sides of the arguement.

Perhaps all caps can't be prevented at times, however I think Stationbeem put in a very good subject.

I'll have to wait till after school to continue.
