For some reason the OO/HO models look alot nicer then the real thing does

Yes she still runs, in fact she was at the head of a special at Hillhouse Huddersfield on 4th July 2007.

Not true I'm afraid - those photos are older (the whole album carries that date, but some photos are marked 1977) - the Mallard hasn't steamed for a long time simply because of the cost of doing so for the relatively little reward.
I can elaborate further - I went to the NRM a few weeks ago (same date as my photos) to listen to a talk (Why Don't Trains Have Steering Wheels) and afterwards they had an open-cab session until late in the night, with only a couple of dozen people in the museum.
I got talking to a driver, who explained that the Mallard was one of the key exhibits that couldn't be away from the main museum for a great period of time because people came to York to see it (and don't like being disappointed), and that also there are other functioning A4s at the moment. However, according to this driver it is in immaculate condition, and could theoretically be fired up and driven away today (if it had a boiler certificate anyway), so who knows - maybe in the future.
I believe, although someone may wish to check this, that it last ran in 1988 for the half-centuary celibrations of it's record-setting run, with a limited boiler certificate for 6 months rather than the usual ten years.
Like I said, there are other A4s out there running at the moment, which really do look spectacular when bowling along at high speed.
Incidentally, today was Scarborough Day for me, so in a few minutes time I shall share some more rail photography

The photos I've uploaded to the public gallery are here: http://picasaweb.google.co.uk/bidmod/ScarboroughSpaPublic - I was really lucky in that a friend lent me a Canon DSLR, which was great fun to play with. Unfortunately, the light at Scarborough was at the wrong side of the loco to take spectacular shots, but I did my best. There are some in the main gallery taken after the engine had been turned that have the light right.
I'm obviously not going to share them all here because there are people that think 50pics of the same engine do get a tad tedious
, but here are some of the highlights (click to go big):
You will note a couple of safety things from this (safety is important) - there are a couple of photos where I am obviously leaning out of the window - this is thoroughly not recommended at all, and I only did this while the train I was in was stationary and that the other track was clear as far as could be seen in either direction (regularly checking each way between shots) - the trains in Britain DO run CLOSE enough TOGETHER so that anyone photographing out of the window can be HIT by a PASSING TRAIN on the other line.
I DO NOT ENCOURAGE LEANING OUT OF THE WINDOW - DO NOT ENDANGER YOURSELF OR OTHERS PERSUING [sp?] YOUR HOBBY.
If anyone got any lineside photos of the train today, I'd be interested to see them

03 1010 running with it's regulator almost at 0, rolls past Dausenau in the afternoon hours of last Saturday. The train was running regular services between Remagen and Nassau as part of last weekends' events due to the Lahntalbahn celebrating it's 150th 'birthday'.

Actually its the best way to enjoy train travel if you do it safely. Just before you stick your head out, check nothing is coming, keep your head inside the train on the inside of the curve, dont do it in electrified zones where there poles to smack you in the head, face forwards at all times, and as strange as it sounds if possible always stand on the inner side, facing the other track, its alot easier to tell theres a big train coming towards you than it is to tell that your about to get hit by some branches which at speed can cause serious injury's. a few of mine out the window
