Great shots John C, it's nice to see the Yorkshire sun shining in February for you, hope you didn't have toooooo many pints of Timmy Taylors....:p

Great photos WEN and the quality from "across the pond" from our friends in North America is getting better every day, thanks Nikos and Steve B. and 007007.

Have been very busy just recently, and it's too cold to stand outside for long periods awaiting silly trains that take forever to come along, yes, I know I'm a big wimp, so I've left my camera in hibernation for another month or so, then I'll be back with you guys, keep your pics coming, even if they are nice old ones, like Lewisners.....:D

Cheerz and take care all. ex-railwayman.

40 years of preservation....

The start of the fun.

Managed to rouse myself early to get to Oxenhope for the beginning of the celebrations..Minus 5 or 6 and bright sun, rare opportunities had to be grasped...

There is no beating frost and steam...

First of all I would like to applaud the pictures shown in this topic. They make every trainspotter's heart beat that few beats faster every time.

I would also like to add a small contribution to the collection by showing two pictures made at Den Haag HS in The Netherlands, my home town.

Lost in translation

Today I took a cabride on the Lahntalbahn, the railroad line running from Niederlahnstein to Giessen and saw what I like to call "A moment in mistranslation":p.

Translation of German text: Warning! Do not cross the tracks until the train has passed (no pun intended).

I'm now a proud owner of a Canon EOS 400D Digital SLR camera. Still have a lot ot learn but already I am starting to see better results than my old point and shoot Cybershot.

Today I took a few pics worth showing.

According to an online translater :-
"Räder müssen rollen für den Sieg! Aber wir muss erst die Lok heizen"

Traslates to ...........................
"Wheels must roll for the victory! But we only the locomotive must heat" :)

For those of you who can't speak German (and for those of you who are mad enough to use Bubbafish), I'll translate.

The wheels must roll for the war! But first we need to heat the engine.

The reason for my use of the phrase is because the wheels are those of a DR BR 52, a mass produced heavy freight locomotive built specifically for the purpose of transporting war materials. Following the war these locomotives were used well into the 80's and a few are still running around in regular service in Poland.

The phrase "Räder müssen rollen für den Sieg!" was conjured by the German Department of Propaganda during the Second World War, the reason for it is obvious. At the time railroads were still the main logistics pipeline of the Nazi war machine, and of course with any evil Stalinist war machine it needs to run smoothly. Hence the phrase so as to influence the railroad workers to "follow the workers example", though I've often wondered what they would do if there was no worker to give them an example to follow. For whatever reason this phrase isn't necessarily well looked upon in Germany, I think for the most part because it was a product of the Nazi regime and for that very reason it is looked down upon. Personally I think the same phrase still applies to every army today, they use railroads in one form or another, even our own Bundeswehr do so.

And for those of you who want a different perspective, well, theres plenty more where this came from;)
