Applying Trainz Patches for Dummies !!!

Iam aware that this info is around in various threads.

UN-breakable RULE #1

never....Never.....NEVER....apply a Trainz patch unless you have a FULL copy of your Trainz Directory in a safe place.
Preferably a different HD or SSD........Kinda hard to do it on a single drive......unless it is a 3TB drive.
Follow this rule and you will NOT NEED to re-install Trainz from the DVD.

Rule #2

(breakable at your own risk) DO NOT CANCEL the process, UNLESS you are sure that TADDaemon/Trainz Util are NOT running.

Rule #3

Before you start trainz after the patch is done (it will say 'completed'), Open the Launcher and click options, then the Developer tab and check mark the box "show database process windows". Now open CM and start an Extended Data Repair. It is well worth the time !!

By following the above you will lessen/eliminate the chances of screwing up things beyond recognition.

You might want to add the idea of going to the developer settings tab, turn on the feature that shows the active database "windows" (makes them visible) so you can actually see what it is doing, when it is busy, and when you are done using trainz they go away when done. You might see them open for a minute or more if busy, after closing trainz, so I would say wait, do not reboot or shutdown, otherwise when you start it back up, it might be busy continuing from where it was, but now rechecking.

But I heartedly concur. I didn't do that the first time and paid the price (in time). Now I have two complete backups.

One little problem I had when copying the entire installation is that the jetlog.txt file in the ..\TS12\bin folder appears to locked by taddaemon.exe and so may not be copied. Perhaps that particular file isn't important for copying purposes but someone unfamiliar with Trainz files might be concerned. The easiest way to avoid that problem is to reboot after running Trainz and before copying the installation.

Maybe Shane should add these notes to his Patching Tutorial on his website.

I've also got my own advice available on there including never run a manual patch with your antivirus software turned on.

This is great common sense and not necessarily for dummies. Backups are a good thing whether you're patching your software or not. Our virtual world is extremely fragile and it's a good thing to have as many backups as possible.
Running with the database processes showing is something that I've done for quite some time. It's great to know what's happening and acts as an OK it's safe to shutdown message.

You wouldn't believe how many of us "experts" don't follow our own advice and have been burned more than once.
